Arkansas State, Miami announce home-and-home

Bryan Harsin AP

Miami is getting an addition to its roster with former Wisconsin defensive end David Gilbert. The Hurricanes are also getting an addition to their future schedule.

The Hurricanes have agreed to a home-and-home series with Arkansas State for 2014 and ’17. Miami will host the Red Wolves for the first game before heading to JonesBoro for a┬áSept. 9, 2017 game, which will also mark the first time ASU has hosted a team from the ACC.

The two teams have met only once before in a 1997 contest.

Arkansas State also has future non-conference games against Missouri out of the SEC and an away game at USC in 2015. Miami’s future non-con schedule is highlighted by a home-and-home with Nebraska in 2014 and ’15.

I think I understand the advantages of Arkansas State scheduling Miami.

However, what are the advantages of Miami scheduling Arkansas State?

Should be a good matchup for the U when they have no scholarship athletes on the roster.

The only thing I can conclude is that the Canes want to expand their recruiting in the area… other than that? Does Coach Golden have a connection with any Ark St folks?

I’m not really sure why the AD would bother with Arkansas St either. Patsy games are pretty much a staple nowadays, but due to the cost of traveling, it’s much smarter to keep them regional (i.e. schedule FIU or FAU, or some other directional state school). 3 buses and a truck traveling 4 hours is cheaper than a chartered plane and truck traveling 30 hours.

If you’re going to spend the money to travel, do so to a fertile recruiting ground, like California or Texas.

There will be greater attendance at the Jonesboro game between these schools than the one in Florida! Ark St should be demanding the greater money here when they travel to Miami!

I found a possible connection here that makes some sense. Ark St AD (Terry Mohajir) worked at Florida Atlantic for 7 years with Scnellenberger before taking the ASU job last year. Schnellenberger still has ties to UM (though stilled employed at FAU) and maybe helped facilitate a conversation between the “progrems”. A long shot I know but my curiousity got the best of me. What do you guys think?
