Clowney one of a whopping 81 players on Nagurski watch list

Manti Te'o

The Nagurski Trophy scoffs in the general direction of the Outland Trophy and its piddly 75-player watch list.

Given annually to the nation’s top defensive player, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy announced Thursday that a grand total of 81 players have been added to its preseason watch list.  Just one of last year’s finalists appear on this year’s list, but that one is a fairly big one both literally and figuratively: South Carolina defensive end and preseason Heisman frontrunner Jadeveon Clowney.

The watch list this year is spread out fairly evenly among the three defensive positional groupings: 28 linebackers, 27 defensive linemen and 26 defensive backs.

Alabama and Stanford pace individual schools with four player each on the preseason watch list, while Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Texas and USC have three each.  With two each, Arizona State, Florida, Florida State, LSU, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon, TCU, Tennessee, Tulsa and Virginia Tech are the only other programs with more than one player.

As expected, the SEC tops all conferences with 16 players listed, followed by the Pac-12 (14), Big Ten (13), ACC (12), Big 12 (12).

Last year’s winner was Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.

And, as is always the case in a post such as this, the complete Nagurski watch list appears below:

Pre-season watch lists are a joke. Having a guy like Louis Nix on there makes sense…Roosevelt Nix? Who?

I’ll put in a vote for Craig Loston, LSU DB, a real long shot. Clowney has the inside track on this one. It may be his to lose.

ND reps the BIG MEN!!! Louie Louie and Stephon will anchor an immovable object in our defensive line. Now we just need to have pedestrian pass defense and offense in order to get to a BCS Bowl.

Excuse me, major bowl. The BCS is dead.

ndnut: I wish you were right…”The BCS is dead” but alas I think it has only changed its name, kept the same execs and administrators and morphed into a playoff system. The NCAA was in love with the BCS, so they don’t want them to go, just use the bowls to feed the playoff game and try to legitimize the national playoff picture.

I think it’s Clowney’s to lose as well. My Utes did not even have an honorable mention…hmrph.

ndnut, we can only pray the BCS has met it’s demise or if it hasn’t it has a new heart and brain.

These watch lists are a joke. “Every defensive player” is on our list this year! #pointless

How stupid. The only possible point of a watch list is to allow judges to zero in on certain guys, but that’s out the window when virtually every game includes somebody on the list. Just tell them to watch everybody all year.

Jackson Jeffcoat is the one to watch!
