Report: USF DB will miss season with torn Achilles tendon

USF Logo

USF is getting some bad news on the injury front — reportedly.

Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Bulls defensive back Josh Brown has torn his right Achilles tendon and will miss the 2013 season as he recovers from surgery. More specifically, the senior will need six to eight months to recover and should be good to go by next spring.

However, by the same fact that Brown is a senior, he will have to pursue an additional year of eligibility. Brown already used a redshirt while recovering from a shoulder injury at Arizona Western College in 2010.

Brown, who had 11 tackles last year with USF, was expected to contribute as the team’s starting¬†nickel defensive back in 2013.

What is the deal with torn achilles lately?! I don’t know if I just didn’t pay enough attention or what but I remember Marino tearing his and everyone being like “he tore what?!?!” and now this feels like the hundreth this year.

As a USF fan I’ll admit our program was a flash in the pan. After the firing of Leavitt, recruiting and the play went downhill. There is a new coach (Taggart from the Harbaugh line) that looks to be putting things back in line though. USF probably won’t ever hit #2 in the polls again, but I would expect a team that can flirt with the top 25 in years to come. Living in Tampa the mood is changing and a lot of local kids are giving USF a real look, so the promise of being located in a recruiting hotbed may finally pay off.

Of course, being outside of the P5 might be too much to overcome and the Bulls will continue a fade into obscurity. I guess that is part of what makes being a fan fun though.

Sorry to hear about Brown though. We are shallow at the position, and it is never good to hear about any kid’s career ending this way.

I disagree that USF was a flash in the pan. That implies something fluky about what they did, when in reality what they did was take talented players that were underrecruited, and turn them into solid collegiate football players. If you look at their defense from 2007, they had a bunch of studs. Stephen Nicholas, George Selvie, Nate Allen, Mike Jenkins, Trae Williams, Ben Moffit. Matt Grothe was a hell of a quarterback. Their downfall started with the firing of Jim Leavitt and hopefully they can right the ship under Taggart.
