Ex-Tide, UVA QB Phillip Sims says he’s close to choosing new school

In roughly one-year’s time, Phillip Sims transferred from Alabama to Virginia only to leave the Cavaliers later because of academic problems. Now, with the 2013 season just a little over a month away, the former five-star quarterback is hoping third time’s the charm.

In an interview with the Virginian-Pilot, Sims said he is considering “three or four” schools and hopes to make a decision by the end of the week. Sims wouldn’t specify to where he’s looking to transfer, but did say it includes a mix of FBS and Division II programs.

“It’s getting close that time where I need to get back in school,” Sims told the paper. “I want to find a place I’m comfortable with, a place I can get a degree and do the things I set out to do in the first place.”

Sims says he’s been accepted to each school he’s considering. If he transfers to a Division 1 program, he would have to sit out a season and have one year of eligibility remaining. If he transfers down to Division II, he’ll be able to play immediately but have two years left.

Sims played in all 12 games for UVA last season as a redshirt sophomore, throwing for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns.
