Texas wide receiver Cayleb Jones was suspended for the Longhorns’ season opener against New Mexico State thanks to an off-the-field incident in February. Now, he won’t suit up for UT at all in 2013.
The university announced late Wednesday night that Jones will transfer. The sophomore has been given his unconditional release, but it’s not known yet to where he will transfer.
“We’ve talked to the Jones family and realize this was a very difficult decision,” Mack Brown said in a statement. “Cayleb is looking for a fresh start, and we understand that and are appreciative of everything he did for Texas. We will support him as he moves forward and wish him the best of luck in the future.”
Jones, who played in 10 games last year, was originally charged with felony assault in March after he allegedly broke the jaw of a UT tennis player who was dating his former girlfriend. The felony charge was ultimately reduced a month later, clearing the way for Jones’ return to the team. He was expected to see increased playing time this year behind Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley.
“We’ve really enjoyed being a part of the Texas program,” said Jones’ father in a separate statement, “but we’ve talked about the situation as a family and we think it’s best for Cayleb to get a fresh start and transfer to another school.”
