Ducks are the media’s preseason Pac-12 favorite

In its first season under Mark Helfrich, the media expects Oregon to continue doing what it did under Chip Kelly: win.

The Pac-12 released its preseason media poll Friday, with the Ducks coming in as the favorite to win both the North division as well as the conference championship.

UO’s not the favorite by a large margin on either front, though, as Stanford received 11 first-place votes in the North compared to 15 for Oregon.  The point totals were equally close, with the Ducks receiving 145 points versus the Cardinal’s 139.

The media doesn’t expect the other division to be a runaway either as UCLA (12 first-place votes, 135 points) barely outdistanced Arizona State (10, 130) in the South.  USC with four was the only other South member to tally first-place votes.

Of the 26 media members who took part in the polling, 14 of them tabbed Oregon as the favorite to win the conference title game.  Stanford received eight first-place votes while UCLA received three.

(Writer’s note: No, I don’t know why there were only 25 votes listed when there were 26 media types involved.)

The voting actually bodes well for the Ducks as each of the last two times the media picked them to win the conference in the preseason (2010, 2011), UO went out and did just that under Kelly.

Below is the complete list of predictions for both the North and South divisions.

1. Oregon (15) 145
2. Stanford (11) 139
3. Oregon State 95
4. Washington 84
5. California 47
6. Washington State 33

1. UCLA (12) 135
2. Arizona State (10) 130
3. USC (4) 117
4. Arizona 76
5. Utah 60
6. Colorado 28

This is EXACTLY the kind of bulletin board material the USC Trojans need to get pumped. I look for USC to have a break-out season and compete for the NC. There are just too many 4 and 5 star players for that not to happen.

For the several dozen Duck fans I know, I am happy for them. This portends well for them this season, and for some of the best fans in college football, I wish them well.

How many media people does Phil Knight have on the payroll, you ask, Burgerhinie? As many as it takes to beat every team last year with the exception of a missed field goal thereby losing to Stanford by three points in overtime. Which is every gosh darn single one of them. If you wanted job in media, I have Phil’s phone number. Which means they will win more games with more media in his pocket.
