Tide’s Dee Liner creates social media ruckus by flashing wad of cash

Nick Saban AP

Perhaps a certain Heisman-winning SEC quarterback should’ve set a better example for his SEC brothers, especially the younger ones?

Regardless, yet another player from that conference has caused an Internet stir by flashing what looks like a significant amount of American currency on a social media website.  This time around it’s 2013 Alabama signee Dee Liner, who took to Instagram to show what’s a significant amount of financial assets for an 18-year-old kid.

Below is the photo straight from the defensive lineman’s account that has caused the latest Internet flap:

Dee Liner

(For those unaware of who the young man is, that’s Liner on the left.)

Flashing that amount of cash in and of itself would’ve been enough to cause a ruckus across the web.  Factor in that Liner was an Auburn verbal commitment — he committed to AU in June of 2011 — before a last-minute flipping to and signing with hated in-state rival Alabama earlier this year and, well, you can extrapolate the reaction to the photo on The Plains from there.

“Don’t judge me when u have no clue what I have been through!!!” Liner wrote on his Twitter account after being inundated with insult.

While there’s been no comment, official or otherwise, you can be certain that UA officials are already in the process of looking into the situation.  And you can be just as certain that head coach Nick Saban is in the process of determining exactly where on Liner’s person he’s going to rip the freshman a new one for putting himself out there like that.

Are there naive people out there still that don’t think SEC schools and their boosters are paying these kids large amounts of money to come to and play for them?

Until the NCAA looks into the entire conference (never going to happen), this will continue, uninterrupted.

The entire conference acts with impunity while the NCAA goes after schools like Georgia Tech and UCF, completely turning a blind eye to the real problem, because their cash cow SEC continues to bring in the big money.

Are there naive people out there that think only schools in the SEC and their boosters give illegal benefits to their players?

    SECheat!!! SECheat!!! SECheat!!!

Shocking…. No not really. Whatever it takes to win in the SECheat.

  4. palmbeachbuckeye says: Jul 29, 2013 6:24 PM

The SEC “bag man” strikes again. Maybe the kid just “borrowed” the money for a nice picture…

  5. rolltide510 says: Jul 29, 2013 6:25 PM

That’s what, $800? Dee and the two random dudes that don’t play football definitely got that from a booster, no other explanation.

  6. be4bama says: Jul 29, 2013 6:31 PM

Whatever stylin. Now his career is over before it began. Dee needs to do himself a favor and transfer.
Does anyone really believe he got the money from the school or a booster? Do you really believe Saban is so desperate for recruits that he pays them?
I did hear Saban’s head nearly spun off when shown the picture. We all are about to learn how long this young man can run without sleep.

    Stylin’s jealously is amusing.
    ROLL TIDE :-)

So sad! A young dumb child post a picture flashing money so all the other teams call us cheaters. Because you can not win on the field social media is your only outlet! So go cry babies! The SEC goes by the same NCAA rules as every other school. Dumb children will be dumb children at any school. So stop your whining, go practice football and stop looking for any excuse for your failures to win! LOVE AL and SABAN. ROLL TIDE OVER EVERYONE

  8. wheezerswin says: Jul 29, 2013 6:45 PM

Not to be an SEC or Bama apologist, But there are pics of different guys fanning out the cash. Who’s to say the money was Liners? Maybe he just wanted his pic with the green. Kinda like the bieb taken his pic with lord Stanley.

  9. jayquintana says: Jul 29, 2013 7:22 PM

We all know college players are being paid. It’s time now to make it legal.

  10. thegonz13 says: Jul 29, 2013 7:42 PM

Come on, no school in the country is immune to dumbasses. Today, it’s the SEC. Tomorrow, it might be the Big 10 or the Pac-12.

The SEC hasn’t cornered the market on idiots. What surprises me is that all across the country, scholarships are wasted on these cretins.

  11. ttalarico says: Jul 29, 2013 7:46 PM

Relax everyone. I heard they got the money from Saban for cutting his grass. Perfectly legal, I’m sure.

When a player decommits from Auburn and then goes to bama, does he have to give the money back to the Auburn boosters or do the bama boosters do it for him?

  22. dcroz says: Jul 29, 2013 9:52 PM

Yeah, we all know that, despite having won three of the last four national titles and having had a bushel of players taken in the NFL Draft, the only way Nick Saban can get anyone to come play for him is by paying them.

Meanwhile, “THE” Ohio State University has 3,574 five-star players willing to give up numerous scholarship offers from other universities to walk on in Columbus for the outstanding academics there. And they all have 4.0+ GPAs, 1500+ SATs, and are all majoring in theoretical physics.

  24. normtide says: Jul 29, 2013 10:53 PM

That’s maybe a grand, do you really think he was paid that to come to Bama, and he just held on to it for almost 2 years? That’s a thousand, split between 3 dudes. Keep making excuses as to why your team can’t win. Excuses fixes problems.

One thing that irks me, the ‘only God can judge me’ that kids use today. No, society does judge you. That’s how civilization works. Try using that line at a job. God will judge you at some point, but till then, your peers will to determine your place.

  26. soflosportsfan says: Jul 30, 2013 1:23 AM

He hashtagged “StruggleOverWit”. How else do you think he got at least a grand in that pile? To all SEC fans, we- the other conferences, are not jealous of your superior football programs. We are jealous of the fact your programs do whatever you want and get away with it creating an uneven playing field. Cam Newton got paid, the world knows it so don’t deny it, and in 1 week the investigation was over so he could play in the SEC championship game; on the other hand, Miami has been investigated for 3 years for the same offenses? Ohio State gets caught and paid their dues, as well as USC.

  27. normtide says: Jul 30, 2013 8:52 AM

Yes, one thousand dollars is enough to make ones struggle ‘over wit’. Alabama has a low cost of living, but it isn’t that low. Three kids pooled together a grand. If this was ten thousand, I would think it looked fowl.

I’m not saying boosters can’t be a problem in the south, and other areas. I just don’t see a thousand dollars as bring pay off level. That would end my struggle for about a week.

  28. bralinshan says: Jul 30, 2013 9:57 AM

Yeah, so Liner flashing cash is definitive proof that Alabama is paying him…

Jump to conclusions much? I LOVE it when Ohio State fans call SEC schools corrupt!

  32. masher5492 says: Jul 30, 2013 11:19 AM

This is not to slander BAMA or Saban but this flashing of money in photos is a problem for the NCAA. It is time they look into it. The majority of them happen to occur in the SEC (Dee Liner, Laquon Treadwell, Dakota Mosely, etc.) and the NCAA always looks the other way. If you go over a school for paying someone or a service and you let the players flash pics and do nothing that is hypocritical. It’s time for a new face of the NCAA. Emmert needs to go.

    @soflosportsfan …

Darlin’ … Bama has been hit with some of the toughest sanctions handed down in the last 15 years. The fact that you think only USC and Ohio State have suffered consequences and no SEC teams have ever been sanctioned means you are naive, ignorant, or egocentric. Perhaps all three. That YouMadBlahBlahBlah apparently believes corruption in college football is limited to the SEC means he’s 12. Perhaps younger.

  38. bamafan73 says: Jul 30, 2013 10:30 PM

I am a BAMA fan – this infuriates me. If the money is his and earned – he is an idiot.

We don’t need kids like this playing at Alabama. This type of behavior is not just embarrassing for the Football Team. This behavior is an embarrassment for the entire University. I want the NCAA to look into this kid and his actions. I hope that Saban makes that a moot point and dismisses him from the team!

  39. bralinshan says: Jul 30, 2013 11:38 PM

Your not much of a Bama fan. A kid flashes cash, you know ZERO of the backstory, and you want him off the team? He wasn’t underage drinking, didn’t get a DUI, or smoking weed, assaulting a co-ed, assaulting someone in a bar, cheating on an exam…or arrested…..

But, he flashes some bills around and he’s without redemption in your mind?

This wasn’t a smart move on Liner’s part. But, I did 2X worse than that when I was 19…

Maybe you should find another team…

  40. Deb says: Jul 31, 2013 11:03 AM

Liner is a naive, ignorant, foolish child. No matter where or how he got that money, it’s hard to believe anyone could be so stupid as to invite this kind of media scrutiny and fan backlash. Right about now, he’s agonizing over the new one Coach Saban ripped him yesterday and wondering whether every dream he ever had about playing big-time football is about to go up in smoke.

Saban’s too smart to do anything so stupid, but you never know whether some jackass booster has come along and screwed with your program. However it turns out, I’d like to knock that kid in the head–but at the same time, you can’t help feeling sorry for him.

  41. thermanmerman99 says: Jul 31, 2013 2:40 PM

at least deb admits that bama is a cheating scumbag school full of 6th grade education level half wits like most people from alabama. when saban is busy giving out debit cards to recruits, stuff like this happens. saban is a bigger scumbag than urban liar

  42. Deb says: Jul 31, 2013 4:11 PM

therman, you need to work on your reading comprehension before you start calling other folks half-wits. I’m just being honest about college football. This situation isn’t unique to Bama. Thinking so only demonstrates your own ignorance.

  43. normtide says: Jul 31, 2013 4:17 PM

Sounds to me like therman’s team must suck. He spends a lot of tine crying about good teams.

  44. thermanmerman99 says: Jul 31, 2013 4:54 PM

how tall is saban when he is in full vertical leap mode like the above picture? does he get close to 5 feet tall yet? he has the “biggest” little man complex i have ever seen. this guy is a pure joke. he spends more time dyeing his hair and going to tanning salons than his wife. he is like a 63 year old justin beiber.

  46. Deb says: Jul 31, 2013 5:19 PM

therman, we Bama fans don’t care if Saban is tiny enough to fit in our pockets, combs his hair with brown mascara, or rolls himself in caramel every night and bakes in the toaster oven to get tan. We only care that he’s the best college coach in the business … and we have the crystal to prove it :D

  47. hotlantalaw says: Jul 31, 2013 5:41 PM

Typical tide. Low graduation rate thugs.

  48. thermanmerman99 says: Jul 31, 2013 5:45 PM

it took 2 major flukes the last 2 years for alabama to even get into the national title game, and all of a sudden saban is this brilliant genius? i dont understand the hype with this guy. guess everybody forgot about his terrible coaching job in 2009 against texas, going for it on 4th down at his own 30 something yard line in the 1st quarter and failing, getting schooled by texas and mack brown until mccoy got injured, and still barely held on to beat a redshirt freshman qb who had never played before. talk about overhyped “dynasty” , a “dynasty” includes not even winning your division 2 years ago. a “dynasty” includes losing a game at home the last 2 years as overwhelming favorites to big underdogs?

  49. normtide says: Jul 31, 2013 5:59 PM

Luck doesn’t happen on schedule. Would you trade your team’s win/lose record for Bama’s, over the last four years? There is a reason an Alabama article gets so many hits, and yours get few.

Hotlanta, got check their grad rate, that’s with early exits to the draft. APR is second in the SEC, and top 15 nationally. If I remember right.

  50. clayme52 says: Jul 31, 2013 7:19 PM

  51. Deb says: Jul 31, 2013 10:28 PM

    therman …

You are funny. Yes, I think “everybody” has forgotten your version of the Texas game. Wonder if Mack remembers it that way in his dreams …

You have no idea how big an Alabama fan I am and have been since 1957. I played football at Alabama in the early 70′s.

I can tell you what Coach Bryant would have done had he been Alabama’s current Coach! The young man would not have gotten to say a word. Coach Bryant would have told him to turn his equipment in and head home.

I think Saban is an awesome Coach. If there are not some extenuating circumstances he should send this kid home.

So, I suggest you keep your opinions about me being an Alabama Fan to yourself. You know nothing about me and my values. I can guarantee you the other players on Alabama’s Team in Leadership positions are having serious conversations with this kid.

The point is it does not matter if the money is his or not. The problem is you your on the reigning National Championship Team. You must handle yourself accordingly.

If by chance he remains a member of Alabama’s Team he will be watched very closely by other players, coaches, and other University representatives. He better understand what he represents:
    1) University of Alabama Football Team
    2) The University of Alabama
    3) All the current and former players of University of Alabama Football
    4) Coach Saban and all other Coaches

You seem very flippant about the possibilities of this immature action and all the repercussions.

Please, take all of this into consideration before making a statement about my loyalty to the University of Alabama Football, University of Alabama, all former, current, and future University of Alabama Football Players.

Alabama’s defense won the game against Texas. The offense played horrible and still came out with a win. 2009

2010 – Alabama loses by 1 point to Auburn – The National Champion

2011 – Alabama loses to LSU at LSU by 1 even though they missed 4 field goals. Alabama plays #1 LSU beats them 21-0. LSU didn’t cross the fifty yard line until the fourth quarter.

2012 – Alabama loses to Texas A&M by 3 points- A&M scored 21 points in the first quarter – terrible defensive calls by Kirby Smart – blitzing a safety 2 out of every 3 downs – gave Johnny Manziel wide open lanes to run – A&M scored 3 points the last three quarters – Alabama wins a close SEC CG against Georgia – plays #1 Notre Dame 41-14. There is not a better Coach in the Country the last four years.

Saban has 3 National Championships in 6 years!
How long has Mack Brown been at Texas and how many National Championships does he have under his belt?

Who’s your pick for best College Coach over the last four years or even six?

    Rolllllllllllllllll Tideeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
