Columbus police: Carlos Hyde will not face charges in assault case

Carlos Hyde AP

Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde was connected… and then reportedly cleared… only to be re-connected later… to an alleged assault of a female victim earlier this month.

But it looks like Hyde won’t face charges in the incident. Columbus police told multiple outlets today that the running back will not be charged with assault because the woman involved does not want to pursue the case. Since the decision was made by the woman, the case is considered closed.

Hyde was originally named a “person of interest” related to the incident, which occurred at a Columbus night club. Two reports — one from Yahoo! Sports and another from an NBC affiliate in Columbus —  later came out with conflicting information over whether Hyde did anything wrong.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer still has not commented on Hyde’s status since suspending him over a week ago.

Hyde rushed for 970 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Buckeyes last season. He is expected to start for Ohio State this year.

Update 2:00 p.m. ET: The alleged victim has released a statement on the decision not to press charges. Here it is in its entirety via NBC4 in Columbus:

Keeping in mind what is for me and my family I have decided to refrain from filing charges at this time.

Some of the media has rushed to judgment regarding the incident to ensure they are the first to report the information, whether it be factual or false. This has been overwhelming, frustrating and disappointing. It is unimaginable to be exposed to these false reports, claims and rumors and for anticipated 4 months expected to bring this incident to a conclusion.

I would like to thank the Columbus Police department for their patience and professionalism they showed conducting their investigation. They have advised me I have up to two years to consider criminal charges.

I believe the video, if released, will speak for itself when shown in its entirety and not edited or censored.

Thank you

Big Ten fans on here will say, “This is justice! Nothing happened, so this kid has been vindicated!”

Had this been at an SEC school: “See! We told you SEC coaches pay off the police! We told you their guys are thugs who don’t belong in college! We’d have never recruited this kid at OUR schools!”

    And the best goes on….

A top-tier college football program and litigious strippers do not go hand in hand.

Her statement read in part, “…I’d like to thank tOSU for the scholarship and spending money, just for ‘taking one for the team’…”

An Urban Meyer player getting his charges dismissed with no rhyme or reason and a victim who suddenly doesn’t want to press charges?

Shocking turn of events. This has never happened before.

She’s not pressing charges… she’s obviously upset about it. She’s not on the take.

The CPD obviously took a look at the video and said if anyone is at fault here it’s you. You swung first so anything after that is self defense. (I have not seen the video but that’s how it”s been described to me, she hits him then he hits back)You can press charges but its not going anywhere.

Quandry though for Urb… there’s video evidence of your player striking a woman in a bar… he’s been cleared of charges but… how’s that gonna look?

Regardless of what really happened, if she pursued the charges her life would be a living hell as long as she lived in Columbus. Double that if she bated him into slapping her which the video may or may not show. She probably just did what was best for her.

I think she’s waiting until he goes pro and then file charges. Remember she has 2 years to file according to the report. More money for her!

So what do you think Urban will do with him?

    Yep, that’s what I thought.

And all the residents of Gainesville prepared a written apology.

I’m sure Urb had norhing to do with the investigation/0 charges being filed. Just like at Florida…

There’s a “she now has season tickets on the 50-yard line” joke in here somewhere, but I’ll only chime in to say that for those of you that just can’t stand Urban Meyer, I think you’re giving him too much credit. You really think he can influence law enforcement? I mean, seriously, yeah the guy’s got clout, but really, influencing the police? I don’t think so.

I wish the article had a link to the video she referenced. Especially if it really does tell the complete story. She alludes to it telling the story “in its entirety”, which makes you think there’s more to it that she could pursue. So why doesn’t she? Or is she just looking to be a YouTube sensation for her 15 minutes of fame?

    @florida727

If you don’t think the head coach of a major football program (especially in god awful Ohio) has pull with local law enforcement, you’re beyond naive.

Urban and the UF AD had the Gainesville PD bought and paid for.

Prominent football coaches at every level starting at High School have inside connections with their local PD, all the way through the NFL.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that the Patriots barred Aaron Hernandez from their facilities and had his release halfway under the door of the commissioner before he was even charged with a crime?

Clearly by the video and witnesses he never touched her. Not sure why this is even news?

  13. inhokewetrust says: Jul 30, 2013 3:34 PM

I’m just glad now the fuckeyes have no excuses when they come to our house and lose…

  14. niallofthenine says: Jul 30, 2013 3:51 PM

I’m sure Buckeye Nation threatened her and her family’s well being. Just ask Herbstreit about “speaking out”.

  15. thegamecocker says: Jul 30, 2013 4:34 PM

Move along folks….nothing to see here….keep moving…..will probably hear from “Jekyll and Hyde” again before too long. Take your meds today Paul? Back to the basement for you…..

  16. cbass59 says: Jul 30, 2013 6:35 PM

Saw the video. Can’t tell if he slapped her or pointed his finger in her face.

Doesn’t matter. We have a plethora of very good RBs. Will still crush michigan.

  17. dkhhuey says: Jul 30, 2013 6:52 PM

@inhoke – that makes me laugh!!! You hired a coach that is barely above .500 in his entire career and you’re talking smack to a team that has owned your team over the last 10 years!!! Can’t wait to see Braxton silence the crowd as he puts the icing on his Heisman bid kicking TSUN’s ass!!!

  18. normtide says: Jul 30, 2013 9:35 PM

So, in Alabama’s case, they clearly paid that player. But, in this case, everything is clean? Irony.

That said, I give the benefit of the doubt. I prefer to accuse on proof, not just to bash others. Good luck going forward to OSU and this kid.

  19. footballchic777 says: Jul 31, 2013 12:04 AM

Why would she try to pursue this within the 2 year time frame? If there was enough evidence, he would be under arrest now. The evidence, or lack thereof, will not change in the next 2 years. Let’s move on!

Mich has more Big 10 titles than Ohio. And lead the series 58-44

  21. dkhhuey says: Jul 31, 2013 10:07 PM

@henine – yes, we all back in 1901 – 1920ish when there were like 5 team in the country – michigan ruled the world!!! Keep hanging your hat on that Fielding Yost nail hoping that one day you’re team will actually be relevant to the national championship picture!!!
