Alabama a near unanimous No. 1 pick in preseason USA Today Coaches Poll

Alabama quarterback McCarron celebrates with the trophy after his team defeated Notre Dame in their NCAA BCS National Championship college football game in Miami Reuters

We know the college football season is getting close not by the beginning of fall camp, but by our ability to now officially debate which teams are overrated (or not getting any love) heading into 2013.

The USA Today released its preseason coaches poll with the defending BCS champion as the clear No.1 team. The Tide received 58 of 62 first-place votes. However, as the publication notes, Alabama has never have won a BCS title when ranked atop the preseason coaches poll.

Ohio State, the team many feel can get back to a BCS championship game — the final one before College Football Playoff takes over — comes in at No. 2 in the poll with three first-place votes. Pac-12 North foes Oregon and Stanford come in at No. 3 and No. 4, and Georgia rounds out the preseason top five.

Texas A&M and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel have one first-place vote at the sixth spot, and South Carolina wins the early Battle of the Palmetto State by being ranked seventh in the preseason poll to Clemson’s eighth.

An overwhelming favorite to win the AAC this year, Louisville comes in at No. 9 and Florida, which lost to the Cardinals in last season’s Sugar Bowl, rounds out the top 10.

The SEC starts the 2013 season with six teams in the coaches’ poll, followed by the Big Ten and Pac-12 with five, the Big 12 with four, and the ACC with two.

Without any further delay, here’s the preseason poll with first-place votes in parentheses. Which teams are too high? Too low?

1. Alabama (58)
2. Ohio State (3)
3. Oregon
4. Stanford
5. Georgia
6. Texas A&M (1)
7. South Carolina
8. Clemson
9. Louisville
10. Florida
11. Notre Dame
12. Florida State
13. LSU
14. Oklahoma State
15. Texas
16. Oklahoma
17. Michigan
18. Nebraska
19. Boise State
20. TCU
21. UCLA
22. Northwestern
23. Wisconsin
24. USC
25. Oregon State

Agree with most but think OSU is way too high. Oregon and Stanford are better than OSU.

I think Ohio State ( my team of choice) is ranked a little high, but I don’t think Oregon, nor Stanford are better. I would be more comfortable @ the 3 or 4 spot. To me, Louisville deserves a lot more recognition and South Carolina has Clowney.

  5. thraiderskin says: Aug 1, 2013 12:49 PM

I do want to note that USC is almost out of the top 25 and The U isn’t even there, that to me is funny, because thier fans are obnoxious on here.

  6. 8to80texansblog says: Aug 1, 2013 12:54 PM

It’s nice seeing the Aggies get a first place vote, but with the offseason we’ve been having…. 10th feels much better than 6th.

There’s a lot of pressure right now in College Station to build on last years success but not sure how realistic that is. I’d rather be the hunter than the hunted.

Glad to see 5 BiG teams in this list. Let’s hope it is as good at the end of the season.

  10. Deb says: Aug 1, 2013 1:13 PM

Tough for me because I believe the reigning champ always has to be ranked first going into the next season. The Ravens should be the top-ranked team for the NFL. But … as a Bama fan, I hate seeing us start a season at number one. Too much pressure on the team. And it feels weird not to be neck and neck in the preseason polls with LSU.

  11. psublueandwhite says: Aug 1, 2013 1:25 PM

Is it me or does it seem like this year there isn’t that group of really super strong teams.

Bama is clearly the strongest team, but below that, I can see these teams shuffling around the rankings a lot this coming season.

  13. polegojim says: Aug 1, 2013 1:34 PM

Bama is #1, but understand Debs point.

Don’t believe OSU is #3 with cream puff games 1-4, that was my beef last year too… and they struggled with some ‘not so good’ teams. Barely beating Cal and Purdue. I’d put them 15 to start.

Nebraska… the noose should be tightening around Bo’s neck… no more mediocrity.

Michigan… still lots to prove… Gardner at helm and the Defense. I feel good about 17 to start, but realistically think we’re 20+ for now. We’ll see how ND game goes.

  14. dryzzt23 says: Aug 1, 2013 1:42 PM

    ‘Bama cream puff games:
    Va Tech
    Ole Miss
    Georgia State
    Kentucky
    Arkansas
    Tennessee
    Miss State
    Chattanooga
    Auburn

There’s 9 wins over very sucky teams (yes the SEC has cream puffs just like every other conference although ESPN won’t tell you that). Spare me the “3-peat” talk for ‘Bama since it is not worthy of any respect based on their lame schedule.

  20. lbroberts123 says: Aug 1, 2013 2:36 PM

Dryzzzt is obviously jealous of the SEC. And some of the teams he listed will be much improved, Ole Miss being one of them. The team dryzzzt pulls for more than likely was blown out by a SEC team and now comments through pure jealousy.

  22. 8to80texansblog says: Aug 1, 2013 3:29 PM

Just in case anyone wanted it broken down by Conference

Fairly evenly spread out between 4 of the 6 BCS conferences with ACC and AAC bringing up the rear.

    SEC: 6
    PAC 12: 5
    BIG 10: 5
    BIG 12: 4
    ACC: 2
    AAC: 1
    Mountain West: 1
    Independent: 1

SEC dominates the Top 10 though with half of the top 10 teams in that conference.

    Top 10:

    SEC: 5
    PAC 12: 2
    BIG 10: 1
    ACC: 1
    AAC: 1

  23. imaduffer says: Aug 1, 2013 3:35 PM

  26. lanzurrah says: Aug 1, 2013 3:56 PM

  27. normtide says: Aug 1, 2013 3:56 PM

I don’t mind the trash talk. Envy breeds it. If Bama won 3 games last year, they wouldn’t be talked about. I’m hoping there is just as much venom from other fans after this year. As long as there is SEC hating, we are still dominating!

See what I did there, pet and didn’t know it.

“Spare me the “3-peat” talk for ‘Bama since it is not worthy of any respect based on their lame schedule.”

You can only beat the people in front of you. Most of that list is their conference schedule and out of their control. Not sure what you’re standard of excellence is…but 3 peating in anything is more than “not lame”.

  31. dizzieb1977 says: Aug 1, 2013 5:06 PM

So, does the you can only play who is in front of you only work for the SEC? OSU is always bashed for their schedule, but they can only play the teams in front of them, right?

  32. phinswinafceast says: Aug 1, 2013 5:32 PM

How do you always rank Texas and Nebraska on these preseason polls when they are at the bottom of the barrel for their respective conferences. But let’s just scorn the ACC Coastal in its entirety eh?

  33. afsgtret says: Aug 1, 2013 5:43 PM

if alabama can just get by colo st, ga st ,chattanooga, aub, kent tenn and ark they might have a chance. combined totals =25 and 57. ga st ranked#224 last year by sagarin poll. where do you dig up these ? dont look for miss and miss st to be any barnburners either. they both play a couple of good teams ooc. tex put 66 on miss at miss last year. they have them at home this year.

  42. irishdodger says: Aug 1, 2013 8:13 PM

I despise pre season polls….they shouldn’t be released until mid season as most teams play OOC cupcakes the among the first 4-5 weeks.

Other than Bama as #1 (which is a safe bet IMO), the pre season poll usually sets up the higher ranked teams for being overrated & the lower or unbanked teams as overachievers. See an unranked ND last year & low ranked USC Trojans this year.

As of today, I’d pick Bama & Stanford in the NC game. The Cardinal D will be amongst the stoutest in the nation. If their QB can find some kids to throw it to, they should be tough on offense as well with one of the best OL in the nation.

  43. irishdodger says: Aug 1, 2013 8:14 PM

    @tuckfexas,

ND wasn’t even ranked in last year’s preseason poll…how is that overhyped? Surely you aren’t a Sooners fan?

Cleveland is full if stand up citizens. Ok, maybe locked up, against their wills, in some guys house. Ok, not those ones that serial killer got a hold of. I heard they are still searching abandoned houses for more victims, but there are so many, may take a while. People in Cleveland won’t stay for $100 million, ask Lebron. Meanwhile, the south is growing, and dominating. While Cleveland does its best impersonation on Detroit. Man, it must suck to be you.

  45. rachalmark says: Aug 1, 2013 8:29 PM

IF THE PAC:12 AND THE BIG:10 MADE ONE MASSIVE TEAM OUT OF THERE BEST PLAYERS BAMA WOULD STILL KICK THERE ASS

  46. thermanmerman99 says: Aug 1, 2013 8:35 PM

the trailer park tide and their GED having toothless fan base have nothing else. they use their “SEC” homerism as some sort of payback against the north for the civil war. they still think it is the civil war and they think SEC FOOTBALL is their lame pathetic way at getting back at the big bad yankees. alabama fans are pure trash. the walmart tide and their pathetic fans actually celebrated the trophy INSIDE OF A WALMART , if that isnt the epitome of lowlife inbred hicks, then what is. and I’m sure 99% of the bammer fanbase has never even seen a college campus, let alone alabama’s campus.

  47. normtide says: Aug 1, 2013 8:35 PM

Irish, don’t worry with it. When your winning, people want to down you. Its when they don’t talk about you, that’s when you worry.

    Three sports examples:

No one mentions the cavs, unless its them getting the first pick in the draft, again. It a native son getting out of town asap.

No one talks about the Indians, unless they are announcing that they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, again.

No one speaks of the browns, until someone sets a record against them.

So, it could always be worse. Unless you live in Cleveland, there its rock bottom, 24/7.

  48. normtide says: Aug 1, 2013 8:39 PM

Yet, the crystal football hadn’t left the state since 2008, hasn’t left the south since well before that. You should Pinner on that, since your on a college football website.

  51. florida727 says: Aug 2, 2013 12:02 AM

I don’t see how anyone can not vote Alabama #1 to start with. Back-to-back and they return a lot of key personnel, so it makes sense.

That being said, I wish they wouldn’t even post rankings until week 5 or 6, when teams have hopefully played at least a couple of meaningful games. Get past the early-season cupcakes, then let the dust settle, THEN rank teams, so that the rankings really do mean something.

As they stand right now, the ranking mean nothing… except they keep Ben and JT employed :) Love you guys. Mean it. Bye.

  52. BrownsTown says: Aug 2, 2013 10:26 AM

    Norm,

Glad to hear that you’re growing. Those 45-50th (at least you’re not Mississippi) rankings in every quality of life metric need to move at some point.

And you’re right, the three pro sports teams in Cleveland aren’t very good and the three two one zero in Alabama are much better.

But based on the one night I spent in Guntersville a few weeks ago (driving through, of course), y’all do have an impressive amount of bass boats per capita. So there’s that.

  53. normtide says: Aug 2, 2013 10:33 AM

Guntersville isn’t far from me. You could have stopped by for a visit. Too many bass boats vs too many abandoned houses. Tough pick. Plus, calling your teams ‘pro’ is sort of a stretch.

Isn’t Cleveland known as the mistake by the lake?

In reviewing the list, the SEC has 6 in the top 13

B1G and PAC-12 are about right. ACC is undervalued, and what is shocking is the decline of the Big 12. I know that Big 12 supporters will counter with “we had 9 teams in bowl games last year!” A 4 and 5 bowl record will not help with national exposure, particularly when the conference co-champions get embarrassed in nationally televised games. Perception becomes reality.

Unless Texas rebounds big time, highly unlikely since they have yet to show up against OU, the Big 12 is headed the way of the old SWC because without a conference championship game, the Big 12 will be out of sight, out of mind. A 10 team regional league.

The SEC is loaded again, and Arkansas will be far better than a lot of people think. Should Alabama run the table, they deserve to be a consensus #1, but with A&M, LSU, both Mississippi schools, Arkansas and Auburn just in the division, chances are someone is going to rise up and take a huge chunk out of the Tide somewhere along the line.

Don’t be surprised of a Georgia Stanford National Championship game.

    SEC: 6
    PAC 12: 5
    BIG 10: 5
    BIG 12: 4

It is actually a little more even than it appears at first glance. Each of these conferences have approximately 40% of their membership in the top 25 since they have 14,12,12 and 10 teams respectively.

  72. dhardy8207 says: Aug 25, 2013 10:15 AM

I LOVE all the “trailer park trash” commentary as that truly expresses the jealousy of the Tide’s accomplishments over the past 4 seasons… It is classic for the trolls of the north and west to come out in droves and start lashing out in ways that display their lack of knowledge about the Crimson Tide’s fan base.

What I find hilarious about these comments is the number of fine upstanding youngsters form all across the nation bypassing the PAC 12, BIG 10, BIG 12, and ACC conferences to come play for us “rednecks down here with no teeth”…

Guess that would be where the old saying comes in; “IF YOU CAN’T BEAT THEM, THEN JOIN THEM”!!!…..
