Gators RB out indefinitely with viral infection

Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel is already out for possibly up to two weeks because of appendectomy surgery, but at least his timetable for return is relatively clear.

Gators running back Matt Jones? Not so much.

Will Muschamp said Thursday that Jones is out indefinitely with what’s being called a “serious viral infection.”

“We’re filling [Jones] full of antibiotics and how his body responds will tell me how quickly he can come back,” Muschamp said, adding that he wouldn’t know “until the end of next week” what the definitive timetable would be.

It’s a tough loss for the Gators right out of the gate, especially since it’s unclear when Jones will be back. The sophomore had 275 yards and three touchdowns last year, but a strong spring had people buzzing about his potential in the backfield this season. His absence likely means more carriers for Mack Brown and Kelvin Taylor during camp -- and possibly into the season depending on just how long “indefinitely” turns out to be.
