Even though Bob Stoops made it clear the competition is ongoing, it would be surprising if Blake Bell -- all 263 pounds of him -- was not named Oklahoma’s starting quarterback during fall camp. The pecking order behind Bell, on the other hand, appears more up for grabs.
However, one quarterback still technically eying the starting job has seen his chances take a major, if not outright definitive, hit. Sooners coach Bob Stoops confirmed on Thursday that Kendal Thompson has sustained a fractured foot and will undergo surgery. The good news for OU is that Thompson’s injury is not expected to sideline him too far into the 2013 schedule.
“We’re optimistic that Kendal will return early in the season,” Stoops said. “Kendal will undergo a surgical procedure today. He is eager to rejoin his teammates on the field as soon as possible.”
That means Bell will be competing directly with Trevor Knight for the No. 1 spot in Week 1 against Louisiana-Monroe.
