Schools clear Clowney, Braxton Miller of autograph wrongoing

USC football practice AP

While the jury remains out as to whether Johnny Manziel will — or even should — face NCAA sanctions, a pair of high-profile players have been cleared by their respective institutions.

Both South Carolina and Ohio State acknowledged Wednesday that they have looked into the sale of memorabilia signed by Gamecocks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller, respectively, and found no wrongdoing.  The mini-probes came in the wake of the Heisman-winning Texas A&M quarterback being linked to a handful of autograph brokers, some of whom alleged that Manziel received payment in exchange for his signature.

At least as far as USC is concerned, that’s not an issue on Clowney’s end.

“We have investigated things that have been on eBay with him and student-athletes before,” associate athletics director Chris Rogers told GoGamecocks.com. “In the situations I can say we looked into, there was no further for us to go, and we determined there was no violation.”

As far as Miller is concerned, OSU athletic director Gene Smith said there was “no issue… none whatsoever” regarding items signed by the star player.  Those items, Smith said, were by and large signed by Miller at the Big Ten’s kickoff luncheon last month and the quarterback was not paid for the appearance.

OSU officials began looking into autograph-related “issues” involving Miller Sunday night, shortly after the Manziel story broke nationwide.

That’s actually a really good idea… especially in practice.

Good catch on the helmet… Maybe they should just cover him entirely in bubblewrap and totally nerf him.

The courts decided this years ago, and South Carolina cannot legally use USC. While you may not agree with it, the fact that Southern Cal is the “only” USC is technically (or legally, at least) true. While it may be easier to refer to South Carolina by the USC acronym, perhaps such use is not appropriate for people who should be in the know about this issue.

This two will get away with breaking the rules. Did you really think that the schools in question would do the right thing. Just as in the case of the little punk at A&M he will walk also. Most NCAA schools run pretty clean programs. I belive USC and OSU are not on the list.

By the way the Big Ten Luncheon was $100 a ticket and sold 1700 tickets.

The conference gets paid, the athlete gets a free lunch and has to sign autographs for a few hours…

A microcosm of this whole system.

    because i didn’t. slime’s gonna slime, i guess.

  17. ajarkoski says: Aug 7, 2013 5:16 PM

Thanks for the links, didn’t know the history. I have a couple of shirts that have USC on it and UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. Not sure who made them off hand. The courts just ruled on the school. Free Speech and Free market allows the usage. GO USC GAMECOCKS.
Would love for the two schools to meet. That would be fun.

  18. ajarkoski says: Aug 7, 2013 5:24 PM

    Clarification:

Thanks to posters on another discussion board:
This was not about USC, it was the interlocking SC on the baseball uniform. Still dumb:
    http://news.sc/2010/01/22/lawyer-calls-gamecock-logo-goofy-little-chicken-in-fight-over-sc-lo go/
    http://www.ajc.com/sports/will-the-real-usc-283849.html

And I think the USC shirt I have came from the East Coast SC University.

  19. dontfwme says: Aug 7, 2013 6:24 PM

It feels like we are getting off topic a bit, but to clarify, USC won court battles for both “USC” and the interlocking “SC” logo. There were two separate decisions about each of the trademarks, so its easy to miss one. It was only an issue for baseball and basketball jerseys because South Carolina’s football jersey say “South Carolina”.

And I’m all for aftermarket shirts. They are cheaper than the ones sold by the university, and their subject matter is usually way more fun. How many bruin fans love their “university of spoiled children” shirts? i’m fairly certain you can’t pick one up at the ucla bookstore. And for usc fans, who doesn’t want a “my maid went to ucla” shirt? But alas, I couldn’t find one at the usc bookstore. So wear the heck out of your USC South Carolina shirts.

Here is another article talking about it, if you are interested: http://www.examiner.com/article/usc-athletics-court-rejects-south-carolina-s-appeal-to-trademark-sc-logo

As usual – when attorneys are introduced my “give a damn” meter bottoms out. Attorneys have no place in collegiate athletics (hear me Manziel)?

USC = University of South Carolina. When Southern Cal decides they’re relevant I’ll care. Maybe Mark Sanchez will file an appeal. Or maybe “90210” will make a comeback (those odds are as high as Sanchez making the Super Bowl).

  31. jonkybon says: Aug 8, 2013 6:42 AM

I believe that all schools use the extra padding on helmets before engage in actual hitting drills. Once the physical practices start, the helmet padding comes off.

  32. jonkybon says: Aug 8, 2013 6:52 AM

OMG, the Univ of South Carolina has cleared their star player of major violations twice in the span of two weeks. Their first investigation into agent contact took them one day to clear Doo Doo. The autograph investigation took them less than an hour to clear him.

Either he really is clean (which is hard to believe with all the picture evidence) and the University of Second Chances can prove the source or South Crapolina (who is already on probation for the second most improper benefits in the history of the NCAA) may be looking at the Death Penalty. Couldn’t happen to a classier (or total lack of in this case) fan base.

No football at the Univ of S. Carolina isn’t any loss. Who will miss a perenial fifth place program that only gets that high by breaking rules. $60,000. at the Whitney and they didn’t get a bowl or TV ban? Money most likely changed hands.

  33. jonkybon says: Aug 8, 2013 6:57 AM

PS As the photos of Clowney getting out of Jay Z’s limo at the ESPY’s circulated on FB, pictures of Clowney signing autographs in a hotel room are all over the internet and for sale on ebay.

The same seller that has Manziel under the NCAA microscope has 19 seperate listing of Clowney. Coincidence?

I believe the Ole Ball Sack knows both allegations are legit and is making his last hurrah. As he left Florida in a bad way with the NCAA, so too will he leave SC and all the cock lovers.

Isn’t asking a university, ANY university, if one of their own players is guilty of an infraction kind of like asking a cat if they ate the canary?

  36. 8to80texansblog says: Aug 8, 2013 9:48 AM

Yeah it’s stupid. According to the report, the extent of OSU’s investigation was they looked at the items on the website and then talked to Miller….

“Well he said he didn’t do it, so….. plus we just had an undefeated year with no postseason, and that sucked so we don’t wanna do that again, so….. we’ve decided he’s innocent, thank you and we won’t be taking any questions”

  37. tobeexact says: Aug 8, 2013 10:00 AM

The ncaa is a group of crooked idiots along with the infrations committee which are suppose to be seperate entoties but yet act as one.
They do little to nothing to most schools who actually violate naa rules but want to get involved in criminal matters.
It comes down to what conference your in and who you know like oregon and mr ,nike backing them.
The university of south carolina self imposed there own penalties when it came to paying players , they got away with murder for a lack of a better word, because they claimed we did r own investigation and put in place rules and guidelines that would prevent it from happening in the future. What a joke you violated major rules , just like miss st who also claim the same thing , along with many sec teams. Its also funny how the black players with criminal arrests have been getting all charges dropped against them while the opposite happens to white players ,i had to throw that in there since a black senator can use racial slurs and not one.peep from the white house, which also brings me to the question of the white house and congress trying to get involved in the ncaa and college sports and trying to pass legislation in regards to college sports.
What is mrs obama going to try and push for next, football players are over weight and set a max wieght of 190 lbs or toi cant play. I know its off topic a bit ,but the point is ,is that to many people are involved in telling universities what they can or cannot do. Who cares if someone is willing to pay a player for his autograph in the hopes it will be worth money at some point in time. Yes these young adults are getting a free education ,but at the same time the ncaa its self is making hundreds of millions of dollars off of these kids and billions threw out the entire industry.
I sincerely hope that the big five conferences tell the ncaa to shove it and have mr. Emmeret work for a living.

  38. Anoesis says: Aug 8, 2013 11:25 AM

At first glance I thought Clowney had transferred and I’d managed to miss it.

C’mon, John, despite Southern California owning the rights to those initials, the team from Columbia has been known as South Carolina as long as I’ve been watching college ball (1967 is my earliest memory).

If you are going to mis-use those initials at least put an identifier on it so we know who you are talking about (USCe works; you can say the “e” stands for excellence).

USC=University of Southern California. By tradition and by law.

  40. clemsonstillsucks says: Aug 8, 2013 1:19 PM

    LOL

I’m sure after Georgia waxes Clemson’s posterior it will somehow be due to Spurrier, Clowney, and initials.

A question – if only 2/3’s of Howard’s Rock remains (I guess the locals smoked the other third…wink, wink, Jonk), then does that mean that Clemson will suck 1/3 less, or 1/3 more? Or will this yet again yield another source of excuses?

  41. onbucky96 says: Aug 8, 2013 4:04 PM

What’s he lying about. I understand he comes off a S. Carolina hater, but not sure any of what he said was a lie…. Never heard about the pic of Clowney signing in a hotel room, but the 19 Clowney items for sale on eBay from the same guy in the Manziel scandal that also had 19 Manziel items for sale is a bit hard to contradict.

  47. jets12 says: Aug 9, 2013 1:20 PM

Not saying the picture is not on a hotel room. So what if it is. Whether he or anyone else took money for signing will be near impossible to prove. The fact is we don’t know what happened and we probably never will. You can go on ebay and find signed items from a ton of people. Clemson players included. Does that mean they were paid for doing that also?

  48. jets12 says: Aug 9, 2013 1:30 PM

By the way @8to80texansblog to answer your question about jonkybon and his lies. He has posted in the past that he knows me personally and that is a lie. He posted that he knows my family personally and that is a lie. He has posted that he talks with my mother on a regular basis and that is a lie. He posted once that I was wanted by law enforcement for God knows what and that is a lie. He posted that he met Clowney once and told him exactly what he thought of him during the conversation and that is a lie. These are just a very few of the lies. So as I say:
