‘Canes officially add transfers from Wisconsin, Virginia

Earlier this week, Miami officially added a defensive tackle transfer from Oklahoma State.

Two days later, the Hurricanes have officially doubled up on that defensive line addition.

The U confirmed via a press release Saturday morning that defensive linemen David Gilbert and Justin Renfrow have joined the Hurricanes football program. The former comes to Coral Gable from Wisconsin, the latter from Virginia.

Both players have one year of eligibility and, as they have graduated from their previous institutions, will be permitted to play immediately in 2013, and both can make an immediate impact in UM’s line rotation.

Gilbert played in 25 games his first two seasons in Madison, but missed all but four in 2011 after suffering a season-ending injury to his right foot. While he started 13 games in 2012, he missed all of spring practice this year after undergoing another surgical procedure on the same foot.

When healthy, Gilbert was a force along the Badgers’ defensive line. His 9.5 tackles for loss last season were good for third on the team, while his five sacks were fourth. Following the season, the junior was named honorable mention All-Big Ten.

It had previously been reported foot injuries would end Gilbert’s collegiate playing career, although subsequent stories surfaced in June that he would move on to Miami.

Renfrow appeared in all 12 games for the Cavaliers last season, and was credited with 11 tackles. All told, he played in 22 career games for the Hoos.
