Oklahoma DE out six weeks after having spleen removed

The defensive line remains one of the biggest areas of concern for Oklahoma heading in to the 2013 season. News today out of the Sooners’ preseason camp did little ease those worries.

Bob Stoops said that freshman defensive end D.J. Ward is having his spleen removed and will be out six weeks. That would put Ward back on the field -- or the practice field, at least -- near the end of September. He has not been practicing with the team because of the condition.

For what it’s worth, Ward posted on his Twitter account that “everything went well.

Ward was a four-star member of the Sooners’ 2013 recruiting class. His role on the D-line remained to be seen, but depth is an issue along that front. At this point, OU can ill afford to lose any more players at that spot. Stoops has not decided if he plans to redshirt Ward or not.
