John Mellencamp’s son, a walk-on Duke CB, facing felony battery charge

Just weeks before the start of the college football season, we have perhaps our most offseason-y post of 2013.

According to the Herald Times, Hud Mellencamp, a walk-on Duke cornerback and son of John Mellencamp, is facing a felony battery charge for his alleged involvement in a fight earlier this summer. Hud’s brother, Speck, and friend, Ty Smith, are also facing felony battery charges. Smith is the son of Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith.

From the paper:

According to a report from BPD Detective Rick Crussen, the victim was sitting on his front porch with two friends when the Mellencamps and Smith walked up the steps. He said he asked them what they wanted, then was struck in the face by Speck Mellencamp.

After that, “he began being punched, kicked and stomped by Speck Mellencamp and the other two males. They have been identified as Hud Mellencamp and Ty Smith,” the probable cause affidavit in the case states.

Hud Mellencamp, who has previous boxing experience, says he was not involved in the altercation, though eye witnesses claim otherwise. The fight allegedly ocurred as a response to Speck getting hit in the face during a party at the house earlier in the evening. No word on whether the injuries sustained by the victim, ahem, “hurt so good” (I’m so sorry).

Hud did not see any playing time with the Blue Devils last year.

    NOT ACCEPTABLE!! Throw the Mellencamp’s out of DUKE! I don’t care what happened previously, you fight, you go! No room for this kind of nonsense from young adults who should know better.

    Hud is about to find out what his dad learned a while ago: you fight authority, authority always wins.

    Seriously, what could possibly go wrong when three guys named Hud, Speck, and Ty hang out?

    Duke needs a corner that won’t drive them crazy, someone that knows the meaning of “Hey, hit the highway!”

    Ah, the lyrical puns just write themselves with stories like these.

    A fan of Notre Dame is seriously commenting on rich, spoiled kids with a sense of entitlement? Really?

    @11inthebox:

    YUP…b/c other university’s (including your favorite) have ZERO alums who are entitled rich kids. Gimme a break. Have you ever been on a major state college campus? Quit generalizing…it’s unbecoming.

    Actually, I don’t think Mellencamp ever liked Cougar. My understanding is that he was coerced into using the name John Cougar by some hotshot record exec that didn’t think Mellencamp was a marketable name. After having a couple hits as John Cougar, he had a little more cache, and added Mellencamp back to his name, then later dropping Cougar altogether.

    So, this guy takes a felony beating and the “writer” finds humor in that?

    Lowlife, celebrity-worshipping, jock-sniffing piece of shit.
