Just weeks before the start of the college football season, we have perhaps our most offseason-y post of 2013.
According to the Herald Times, Hud Mellencamp, a walk-on Duke cornerback and son of John Mellencamp, is facing a felony battery charge for his alleged involvement in a fight earlier this summer. Hud’s brother, Speck, and friend, Ty Smith, are also facing felony battery charges. Smith is the son of Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith.
From the paper:
According to a report from BPD Detective Rick Crussen, the victim was sitting on his front porch with two friends when the Mellencamps and Smith walked up the steps. He said he asked them what they wanted, then was struck in the face by Speck Mellencamp.
After that, “he began being punched, kicked and stomped by Speck Mellencamp and the other two males. They have been identified as Hud Mellencamp and Ty Smith,” the probable cause affidavit in the case states.
Hud Mellencamp, who has previous boxing experience, says he was not involved in the altercation, though eye witnesses claim otherwise. The fight allegedly ocurred as a response to Speck getting hit in the face during a party at the house earlier in the evening. No word on whether the injuries sustained by the victim, ahem, “hurt so good” (I’m so sorry).
Hud did not see any playing time with the Blue Devils last year.
