Bob Stoops to name starting QB next week

Who will be the starting quarterback for Oklahoma still remains to be seen. But at least we have a tentative date for an announcement.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops said on Friday that on official announcement will come next week.

Will it be redshirt junior Blake Bell (pictured, right)? That still seems to be the general consensus, but the longer Oklahoma’s quarterback battle goes on, the more Trevor Knight (pictured, left) figures to have a chance. Stoops has been consistent if nothing else when it’s come to his tight-lipped approach on deciding who will succeed Landry Jones.

“It’s natural to assume that just because Blake, for the last two years, has done our short-yardage package,” Stoops said on the Doug Gottlieb show Thursday. “But what people don’t realize who aren’t in the coaching game is how a young freshman can change in his second year, the more snaps he gets. Probably the most growth of a quarterback happens in that year, where they’re around through another whole summer and another whole training camp. They can make a huge jump. And Trevor has done that.”

Bell looked to have an edge on Knight and Kendal Thompson, who is now out with a fractured foot, but it appears Knight has gained some ground since then. Or Stoops just isn’t in a rush. One of the two.
