With Brewer out with back injury, TTU’s QB choice a game-time decision

Michael Brewer was presumed to be Texas Tech’s next starting quarterback. Thanks to a back injury, however, exactly who will take the field for the Red Raiders against SMU in Week 1 has become much more uncertain.

Kliff Kingsbury confirmed on Friday that Brewer had sidelined while dealing with an aggravated back, something that had been making its way through the rumor mill for the past several days, and that it was “kind of day-to-day at this point.”

With Brewer out, Kingsbury is now down to freshmen Davis Webb (pictured) and Baker Mayfield, the latter being a walk-on from Lake Travis High School outside Austin.

It’ll be a game-time decision now,” Kingsbury said. “We’ll let them play it out these next few weeks and go from there.”

Webb was a three-star member of TTU’s 2013 class and Mayfield had an accomplished career at Lake Travis, but Brewer had the experience with nine game appearances in 2012.
