Report: Starting Sooners CB suspended for opener

When Oklahoma takes the field for its opener against Louisiana-Monroe, its defensive secondary will reportedly be down a starter.

Citing a source close to the team, FOXSports Southwest is reporting that cornerback Cortez Johnson will serve a one-game suspension for violating an unspecified team rule. The Sooners have yet to confirm Johnson is facing any type of disciplinary action.

Johnson had been expected to begin the season as one of OU’s starting corners.

In March of 2012, Johnson announced that he would be leaving Arizona, ultimately transferring to the Sooners in May of that year. After his appeal for immediate eligibility failed, Johnson sat out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules.

Early last December, Johnson, along with OU wide receiver Jalen Saunders, was arrested on a marijuana possession charge. Johnson’s one-game suspension to begin this season, if the report comes to fruition, could be related to that charge.
