With some degree of uncertainty swirling around Johnny Manziel‘s availability for the 2013 season, Texas A&M’s options at the quarterback position have been sliced by one should Johnny Football be ruled ineligible or suspended for X amount of games.
According to Gigem247.com, quarterback Matt Davis has informed the A&M coaching staff of his intentions to transfer from the Aggies football program. To where Davis will head is unknown, although the JUCO ranks for a season could be a possibility.
As of now, A&M has yet to confirm the departure.
Davis leaves College Station a year after coming into the program as one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in the 2012 recruiting class. Given four stars by Rivals.com, Davis was listed as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 15 player at any position in the state of Texas. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2012.
Davis’ departure leaves redshirt junior Matt Joeckel and true freshman Kenny Hill as the only two left to battle for the backup job behind Manziel -- or the starting job in place of Manziel depending on the NCAA. All three had been jockeying for the spot throughout summer camp. Joeckel is the only one of the three that has any game experience at the collegiate level, having attempted 11 passes in 2012.
