Bon voyage and godspeed, Ben Kercheval

IRAN-POLLUTION-HEALTH-ENVIRONMENT AP

Now I understand exactly how Florio felt when Rosenthal left PFT in that one episode of Seinfeld that was absolutely hilarious and love seeing in reruns and love referencing in myriad posts.

Very sad right now, I am. And very, very, very proud of the news that our very own Ben Kercheval has decided to leave the CFT nest and spread his Internet wings elsewhere. While I won’t go into the particulars — his new destination rhymes with “Reacher Bleport” — you can check him out on Twitter @BenKercheval and bug him there instead of, as you normally do, in the comments section.

When it comes to this development… damn.  Just, damn.

Since the summer of 2010, it’s been me and Ben at CFT. Ben and I. Through a whole helluva lot of crap, both personally and professionally.  All here at this lil’ podunk website just doing 24/7/365 what we both love: college football.

The son of Hoppy, for all of the God’s Country readers in the audience, was a bit much in the beginning. Endearingly insufferable, as that old grammatically incorrect chestnut goes.  As this phase ends, though, he’s turned into a helluva writer and an even better friend.

Godspeed, Ben. You’ve earned this, and even more you deserve this.

And God bless you Ben. You’ve been a great colleague and an even greater friend. What little heart I have left (you understand that) is full of nothing but joy and happiness for you today, even as it saddens me greatly to have to type this post.

You know my digits. Don’t hesitate to use them.

At least it’s at a slow point in the season and won’t hurt coverage.

    Ben,

Thank you for your patience with us and your writing, which became better and better. Should you ever find yourself coming into south Louisiana and a hurricane is not in the offing, please communicate with us and we will treat you to the finest eating you have ever eaten, we just may have to help you up when you finally finish! ha.

My family and I wish you well on your new endeavor and hoping you will add some class and truth that sometimes seem to be lacking there.

Indeed, all the best to you, Ben!

taking his ACC hatin’, UM logo upside down posting, NorthWestern Argonauts (or whatever you alma mater is) loving out of CFT land?!?! say it ain’t so!

I will happily follow to twitter, I’ve got a soccer guy on the Reacher Bleport I like.

Now I will have to check in for the latest ACC hate over there.

Your twitter handle should have been @BennyK #justsayin’

Wish you success and hope you get the first inside scoop when the NCAA finally releases its findings against the U.

Bleacher Report? Really? Well maybe Ben can bring a little credibility to that site then because hoo daddy is it troll central over there. Anyway, good luck Ben. But to be honest I hope you change your mind.

Again, goodbye and good luck to Ben in his new job… he will be missed :)

It will be interesting to see who his replacement will be… now we will have to break in a newbie… :)

If he is going to BR then I sure hope he can get his facts straight and write better than most of the folks over at BR.

    One down one to go

  9. lewp says: Aug 24, 2013 3:14 PM

Good luck Ben, I didn’t know you that well, and I was surprised we are about neighbors. Good luck.

To John: I know it will be impossible to replace your friend, but I can write, I blog, how about a shot at Ben’s chair?

This is a great site. BR is undoubtedly a disgrace to sports reporting. Poorly administrated and extremely poor authors except for 3 or 4 out of maybe 500. Love Ben and John but Ben made a big mistake.

    Ben,

May the wind be in your face and the road all downhill, You may have had your critics, but overall
    you were exemplary.

    Ben:

Good luck, good health, long life! You will be missed on this site. I already have a BR app so I will continue to follow your fine work.

Damn. He was my favorite footballtalk writer by far! Florio holds the other end of that spectrum pretty well locked at least.

  14. tigersgeaux says: Aug 24, 2013 4:29 PM

    Best to you.

  15. parkcityute says: Aug 24, 2013 6:44 PM

Ben–there are only a few of us gals here on CFT, but from this one…may the Lord always smile upon you.

Come out to visit us in Utah sometime!

(I think tigersgeaux is a gal also!)

  16. BrownsTown says: Aug 24, 2013 9:27 PM

Nice call, JT. I honor it with a slice of DiGiorno and Folger’s in my cup.

  17. suprmous says: Aug 25, 2013 1:27 AM

As one of the females whos been over here but for only a short time, good grief John you’re gonna make the watah works start flowin. And I can honestly say not many guys have done that as of late and the ones that have well lets just say you’re the only one whos made it worth the trouble. Oh mannnnnn.

  18. WingT says: Aug 26, 2013 10:02 AM

Best of luck Ben, I really enjoyed your posts here at CFT, the best damn College football talk on the world wide web.

  19. southernpatriots says: Aug 26, 2013 5:35 PM

Dear Friends and Fellow CFT posters:

‘The execs at “Screacher Retort” inform me that Ben’s writings should be up on the Retort next week. Near that time also he will be able to found on their site by search
    “BenKerchevalBl…..Rep…”

Hope that is some help to those interested.

  20. suprmous says: Aug 27, 2013 5:48 AM

I’ll just be damned if somebody or some bodies hasn’t gone crazy with the thumbs down. I don’t understand it or get it.

  21. alligatorsnapper says: Aug 27, 2013 6:59 AM

You are right, suprmous. It is sad. “Somebody of some bodies” has/have been busy. When Jimbo and Candi Fisher’s became ill with Falconi anemia and they requested prayer for their son, on everyone post’s, even those who just wished the Fisher’s well, there were thumbs down.

On the injured Tulane player, whose parents asked for prayer, there were thumbs down again.]

Numerous other stories of similar theme, have been met with thumbs down.

Regulars here on CFT, now just ignore them. Either some mentally unsound folks or some kids but as much as possible, just ignore them.

  22. thegamecocker says: Aug 27, 2013 8:04 AM

    @suprmous and alligatorsnapper

It’s sad that people can’t take a step back and realize college sports is just entertainment. Why wish someone ill will when they are sick or moving on to another job. Doesn’t make sense to me. But people are disappointed with the economy, lack of jobs, the cost to live, etc. and when someone is fortunate enough to get a new position, they vent their frustrations by posting and thumbs-down. It’s just unfortunate.

Thanks for your insights as well.

It particularly offends me when the few ladies we have on CFT are offended and may post even less than they normally do, which is not much to begin with. Because of some scurrilous replies by some misogynists some time ago at least one (maybe 2) of the ladies did not post again for many months.

SouthernPatriots will be heading to the Central Savannah River Area to meet with the Williams brothers (HOF Gamecocks). One is not well, and the doc is going with family members to assist him and help the other family members to know what to do, etc.

Hey John – I’m available to assume his spot – I will be completely honest in my homerism, er, assessment of the Buckeyes!

  26. 8to80texansblog says: Aug 27, 2013 11:16 AM

Will miss your takes Ben. I always liked that Ben would come down into the forum and interact with the readers.

I see Taylor is carrying that on.

    Good luck Ben.

I missed so much drama during my hiatus. What a lovely farewell. Sniff.
