Gators cut Morrison’s suspension in half

Florida Texas A M Football AP

After two arrests this offseason, including one that involved barking at a police dog, starting linebacker Antonio Morrison was suspended for at least two games by head coach Will Muschamp.

With one of those charges dropped, however, so has the time Morrison will miss to start the season.

At his weekly press conference Monday, Muschamp confirmed that Morrison will only be suspended for the opener against Toledo.  That also means the starter will be available for the following week’s game, on the road against Miami (Fla.).

In June, Morrison was arrested and charged with first-degree simple battery after allegedly punching a bouncer.  Prior to the alleged punch that led to his arrest, Morrison dipped into his athletic ego and pulled out the ol’ “Do you know who I am? I am a UF football player” card.

A month later, he was officially charged with interfering with police by harassing a police animal.  In late July, the Florida State Attorney’s Office dropped that charge as well as one of resisting arrest.

Morrison started three games last season as a true freshman and had been expected to be the starting middle linebacker entering summer camp.  He was a four-star member of the Gators’ 2012 recruiting class.

Anyone who though the Gators would suspend their best linebacker for Miami was kidding themselves.

But hey, it’s a step up from Urban I suppose. Beat the crap out of a bouncer and catch a battery charge and your punishment is missing a game against Toledo.

Urban would have only given him a half.

    Gotta love that SEC justice.

Will Muschamp: 100% responsible for bouncer beatings.

    Go Gators

And people said it was Urban Meyer? Florida is a cesspool of corruption. No wonder UM left that dump of a school!

Urban suspended his best RB for 3 games charges werent even filed! This guy is finally able to discipline the team the way he wants to. Class act!!

nothing surprising here… we all knew this was going to happen… and can’t say I blame Muschamp.

The suspension was for interfering with the police, the result of barking at a dog. It was an over-reaction by the officer plain and simple – no matter who your team is.

Urban left Florida because he knew he was never going to beat Saban again and it freaked him out to the point that he ended up in the hospital.

He quit on the Florida team and feigned wanting to see his family more often, which apparently he could do from Bristol, CT or whatever game he covered that week.

Enjoy your coach while the times are good, because when the tide turns (no pun intended) he might not be around for long.

He feels that with him on the field UF has a chance! Which is laughable and I see a 8 point win for the U!

Yeah, lets ignore sucker punching a bouncer and catching a battery charge.

Then while on probation from that incident, get arrested under a month later, while breaking curfew imposed by your coach.

    Enable, enable, enable.

He slapped the guy on top of the head. Stupid thing to do, and worthy of a suspension. However, charges were dismissed. The dog barking thing wasn’t something he should be punished for.

  11. lizardgrad89 says: Aug 26, 2013 2:51 PM

Florida didn’t need him on the field to beat Miami. Miami is dog food after the dog is done with it. Florida will dominate the same way they did in 2008.

Yeah step up from urban my ass. Urban has suspended hyde for 3 games even though he was cleared of All charges. But go ahead and continue to bash urban meyer. You gator fans are like the ex g/f who cant get over the guy who dumped her. but sure continue to hate on and bash urban even though he is more harsh with punishments than ur weak ass coach mushchump.

I don’t see how this is a problem. Why would you suspend somebody for an incident that wasn’t worthy of a charge. If coaches suspended their players for being stupid they would only have half a roster every Saturday.

sat is too far away… ppl are so angry over minor things….

urban meyer and “weak ass” mushchamp or good coaches with good teams…. there is no winning in situations like this

He really doesn’t need to play for Florida against Miami. Like ND did to the the u last season, Florida will destroy this club. Wonder if the u fans, all 15,000 of them, will show for the game. This is more a home game for Florida than for Miami. You’ll see how many UF fans show compared to cane fans.

As a Gator fan, I think Will is maybe sending the wrong message here. I don’t think you lessen the punishment just because one charge was dropped. There still IS the other charge. I’m growing very tired of the lack of discipline handed out by ALL coaches because of their win-at-all-costs mentality. What does it teach kids for later in life? (Here’s a hint: not much.)

  17. necr0philia says: Aug 26, 2013 8:41 PM

    @florida727 I couldn’t agree more.

@gamechocker It’s funny your taking wild random shots at the U , there college students and program. I thought by now seeing how your in your 60s you would learn to let go of so much hate. Especially when you have no idea where the hate comes from. Anyway ill be one of the 200 Cane fans at the game. Ill be in section 142 row 1 on the 50 yard line Canes side! Stop by and buy me a round or 3!! I know you don’t drink but ill take yours. We all know you don’t need it with your High Blood pressure. Go Canes!!

Muschamp should have eliminated the suspension entirely. Not only was the arrest for dog barking ridiculous, it wasn’t even a violation of Florida law. The cop didn’t know the law.
