Tech RB Coleman ‘questionable’ for opener vs. Tide

In the middle of last week, injured Virginia Tech running back J.C. Coleman unequivocally proclaimed that he will “definitely” be ready for the opener against Alabama.

Five days ahead of that nonconference matchup, the running back’s head coach has tamped the brakes a bit on that enthusiasm.

Asked twice about Coleman’s availability, the Roanoke Times reports, Frank Beamer tossed out the word “questionable” when it comes to the back seeing the playing field this Saturday. Coleman suffered a pair of ankle sprains -- a left high-ankle sprain and a right ankle sprain -- a week and a half ago, and has yet to resume practicing.

Coleman is listed as the co-starter on the most recent depth chart. If Coleman is a no-go, redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds would get the initial nod against the Tide.

Last season, Coleman led all Hokie running backs with 492 yards rushing.
