NIU’s leading returning RB ruled out for opener vs. Iowa

Already a three-point road underdog heading into its opener with Iowa, Northern Illinois’ attempt to get a jump on a season similar to last year’s BCS bowl appearance has taken a hit.

NIU officials confirmed Tuesday that starting running back Akeem Daniels has been ruled out of Saturday’s opener in Kinnick Stadium. The decision is not a surprise as Daniels has missed all of summer camp with a foot injury.

Cameron Stingily, who had one carry in 2012, will start in place of Daniels.

In 2012, Daniels was third on the team with 447 rushing yards and second with nine rushing touchdowns. Both of those totals are tops among returning running back.

He also finished with 20 receptions (fourth on the Huskies) for 259 yards (fifth) and two receiving touchdowns.
