Well, that’s not the way you want to head into a season brimming with BCS title hopes.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was injured Tuesday morning when the moped on which he was driving was hit by an unidentified vehicle. The vehicle sped away from the scene, witness said, and police are still looking for the suspect.
Mauldin remains hospitalized this afternoon in satisfactory condition. There is no word yet on the extent of Mauldin’s injuries or his availability for the season opener.
In 2012, Mauldin recorded a team-high 4.5 sacks. He started six of the 11 games in which he played.
Entering this weekend’s opener against Ohio, Mauldin was listed as one of the starting ends.
UPDATED 1:24 p.m. ET: Louisville has released a statement regarding the situation involving the defensive lineman.
“Preliminary tests on Mauldin have come back good. Will be kept overnight for continued observation and evaluation for precautionary reasons.”
