Taylor Martinez says shoulder is fine, will be 100% for Southern Miss

Nebraska fans can breathe easier this week.

That’s because Cornhuskers quarterback Taylor Martinez told the media on Monday that his left shoulder is fine and that he’ll be at full strength for his team’s upcoming game against Southern Mississippi.

Martinez bruised his shoulder in the third quarter of Nebraska’s 37-34 win over Wyoming on Saturday. He never left the game and finished 17 of 22 for 155 yards with three touchdown passes (and one pick) and also rushed for 80 yards against the Cowboys.

The senior admitted afterward that he was beat up as he left the stadium with ice on his shoulder.

“It was the first time I got hit in eight or nine months,” he said. “After this week I should be perfectly fine. I don’t get tackled in spring ball or in fall camp. I have to get used to getting hit again and being sore.”

Nebraska will continue to take the right precautions in the run up to Saturday’s game.

“We’re not going to hit him in practice. We never do,” Pelini told the Associated Press. “As far as what he can do, he’ll be out there and he’ll be fine. It’s nothing that will restrict him.”

Based on how the Golden Eagles played last week, Martinez may not have to worry too much about getting hit. Southern Miss was upset by Texas State, 22-15.
