Kenny Bell tweets he’s leaving Alabama

Well, this is certainly an unexpected development.

In a series of tweets posted to his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon, wide receiver Kenny Bell announced that he is leaving the Alabama football team.  Not only that, but it appears the fifth-year senior is stepping away from the game of football, period.

“I know I’m going to lose so many friends and followers and get more negative talk from people but truth is I [don’t] care,” Bell stated, “[I].t’s been a nice run but I’m hanging up my cleats.  … time too [sic] focus on my responsibilities MY KIDS.

“I’ve made so many memories here @ Alabama but some things you gotta let go.  Salute to the team y’all keep grinding and win that championship.”

The Tide has not confirmed the departure.  Head coach Nick Saban is expected to address the media following this afternoon’s practice.

While Bell was listed as the co-starter at the “Z” receiving spot on the final depth chart of the preseason, he did not catch a pass in the Tide’s season-opening win over Virginia Tech.  Last season, Bell’s 17 receptions were fourth on the team while his 431 yards were third.  His 25.4 yards per reception were easily tops on the team.

For his career, Bell started seven of the 35 games in which he played.  He had 36 catches for 712 yards and five touchdowns during his time in Tuscaloosa.

YOUR KIDS need you to get an education.

Talk bout comin outa left field. This’ about as shockin as it gets for early season. I wish Kenny all the luck in the World. I really admire him for the way he’s thinkin of his kids. Granted there’s very few cases as such or at least known cases and when there is a case known you just have to wonder how do the guys juggle class, time at home with the family, practice, maintain their sanity with all that’s associated with bein on the team, and the list goes on. I’ve gotta hand it to Kenny he’s steppin up to the plate and realizin a few things not many do. Again here’s to much success to Kenny and his family.

I’m sure I’ll get flamed for this but the best way to take care of your kids in college is to wrap it up.

Fifth year senior maybe he’s already graduated

For all you people who liked@fitz66 and his comment, you are all very ignorant and insensitive and are showing your true colors about college football. Kenny Bell leaving the team is a personal choice that he feels is best for him, and your hidden selfishness in “get his education” is very flamboyant since Kenny Bell, a 5th year senior at Alabama graduated from the school in December of 2012…best of luck to him and his family, some people will never care/understand about the truth of the decision he made, all they care about is wins and losses…RTR

Not that would impact you genius commenters on here, but he already has his education, and it sounds like he is ready to put it to work for his family. Maybe you should try likewise.

Fitz66 …he already graduate…amy wanna get your facts straight before blasting the guy…

  9. ravensfan8780 says: Sep 3, 2013 4:00 PM

Well since he graduated already won 3 national titles, it seems like it isn’t that bad of an idea

He is a “FIFTH YEAR SENIOR”… He graduated last December… I know its okay…just a quick lesson in speaking on what you lack knowledge of…

Best Wishes to Kenny and his family! Your Crimson Tide family wishes you well!!

“time too focus on my responsibilities”

Forgive me for not assuming he graduated. I guess I was “to” quick to judge.

Should be a rule so players can quit football after 2 years in a program and still have access to the free education. Cut the room and board, that’s fine. Graduate school (after football) should also be given to all 4/5 year football player graduates.

And yes, I know Kenny Bell graduated, but hearing about his decision makes you wonder how many other players would quit football but keep the educational benefits if given the chance.

Apparently he’s graduated but he it doesn’t say he’s quitting school, just the football team.

    @fitz66 …

I’ve seen dozens of posts on this site where people confuse “to” with “too” … “there” with “their” and “they’re” … “your” with “you’re.” I’ve done it myself, and I edit for a living. I’m more than sure you’ve done it a few times. Usually it has more to do with how fast we’re typing and built-in spell checks than our lack of grammar skills. The guy was posting on Twitter, not turning in a thesis. Try being less of an ass, if you can.

fitz66 just admit ur a pathetic idiot and move on.

  16. normtide says: Sep 3, 2013 5:29 PM

Kenny has come through in key moments, key games. I wish him the best. Everything pales when compared to family.

  17. dhardy8207 says: Sep 3, 2013 5:43 PM

Apology accepted!…. I think its easy for people to assume one walking away without pursuing the pros has to have off the field issues. Kenny broke his leg last year in the SEC championship game and I’m not sure how that affected his decision to quit…

But we hear all too much about how young men pursue the “big money” and then end up broke without education to fall back on. I applaud this young man, at least he hasn’t lost perspective on whats ultimately most important…his family…

  18. BrownsTown says: Sep 3, 2013 6:04 PM

Tom Al Betar hooked him up big time.

  19. thebigtim2012 says: Sep 3, 2013 7:24 PM

I don’t know the young man but that moves speaks volumes about his character. Well done sir. Well done.

  20. normtide says: Sep 3, 2013 7:46 PM

Word now is he will return to the team. Given a few days off from practice.

  21. dcroz says: Sep 3, 2013 8:16 PM

He’s apparently changed his mind and is expected back at practice on Wednesday.

  22. be4bama says: Sep 3, 2013 8:28 PM

    Kenny changed his mind!!!!!

  23. tigersgeaux says: Sep 3, 2013 8:56 PM

Panic, consternation, false accusation, animosity…and then…

    Much ado about nothing.

  24. mstiger1 says: Sep 3, 2013 11:56 PM

Well so much for his family and all the kudos you guys were giving him for that. I guess that envelope the midget handed him IS more important than his family.
