Is it way too early to begin talking about the favorite for the 2013 Heisman Trophy? As 2012 Geno Smith would say, it absolutely is. That won’t stop us, however, from making a note as to which way the gambling public is leaning.
In its latest odds released Tuesday afternoon, Bovada.lv has Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater as the favorite at 5/1. The Cardinals quarterback was at 9/1 two weeks prior to the start of the new season, but his monster season-opening performance apparently opened some eyes a little further.
Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, the preseason favorite at 9/2, was up next at 13/2. Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, who was the prohibitive favorite prior to the mini-drama over payment for autographs, checked in at 15/2. Johnny Football had been a 4/1 favorite before the off-field issues dropped him to 15/1; those odds jumped back up to 7/1 after his “situation” was resolved with a half-game suspension.
Two more quarterbacks, Clemson’s Tajh Boyd and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, come in at 8/1. The first non-quarterback listed is Miami running back Duke Johnson at 10/1.
Jameis Winston, a redshirt freshman coming off a breathtaking performance in his collegiate debut Monday night, is tied with Johnson at 10/1.
