Spurrier: “We’re not a very good team right now”

South Carolina v Georgia Getty Images

One day after his Gamecocks lost to Georgia, 41-30, Steve Spurrier’s assessment of South Carolina was typically blunt.

“”We’re not a very good team right now,” he said. “We’ve got to work hard to get our stuff together. We don’t need to worry about any kind of championships.”

The usually-stout Gamecocks defense was shredded by the balanced Bulldog attack. Georgia’s 536 total yards included 266 on the ground. It was the most yards allowed by a South Carolina defense since 2007. All-American defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was largely a non-factor, despite picking up his first sack of the season.

On the bright side, the Gamecocks offense showed some proficiency. Tailback Mike Davis looks to be an upgrade over the departed Marcus Lattimore as he rushed for 150 yards on 16 carries to notch his second-straight 100-yard game. The sophomore once again showed he had downtown speed as he tore off a 75-yard run in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Connor Shaw continued to improve, too, throwing for 228 yards and two scores on 16 of 25 passing. He also ran for 75 yards.

So to say South Carolina isn’t a good team is probably going a bit far. It’s just that the Gamecocks ran into a buzz saw on Saturday. After all, it’s not easy to contain the likes of Murray, Gurley and Co.

As usual, Spurrier seems to be flapping his jaws for one reason only: To motivate his team.

He certainly likes to flap his jaws, but he might be on the money this time.

Classic Spurrier. Rather than admit that UGA has a good team (proven by them beating a good football team), he’d rather say the only reason UGA won is that his team just isn’t very good.

It’s OK, Steve. The feeling is mutual…Bulldog Nation hates you with every fiber of its being, too.

Does UGA have a good team?

Could have fooled me. I saw a lack of tackling. I saw them giving up big plays and not being able to contain Connor Shaw very much. They got lucky Shaw coughed up that ball after running for a first down.

Then again, it is the SEC. This one game probably won’t matter much, if the past is any indication. The past two years S Carolina has beaten UGA and finished behind them at the end (I think?).

S Carolina’s offense looks pretty dangerous when the right calls are made. They get too draw happy at times, which costs them downs. And, as we saw on that 4th and goal run, they are not very creative at the goal line. That 4/goal run was one of the worst play calls I have ever seen in that situation. Does that play EVER work in football? Ok Ok, does it ever work if there’s someone in the backfield other than Cam Newton and/or Barry Sanders?

UGA has a really good offense, though. Their WR had the yips early on, but shored it up in time for their big plays. Gurley is an NFL back too. Murray is overrated, but I still think he’s legit. UGA’s defense is pretty garbage, but maybe they start to look better as the season goes on.

As for South Carolina, their secondary and linebackers are trash. That blown coverage that lead to the big passing TD in the 4th quarter should never happen in a game of this magnitude. The d-line is solid, but, again, if they’re up against a suitable o-line, there are going to be WR to catch the ball, and, once a back gets through that D-line, go ahead and give him at least 8 yards because the Carolina LBs aren’t going to tackle him. Offensively, S Carolina is fine if they just tweak their playcalling here and there. Shaw is the best QB to be there in decades, and Mike Davis has a “high motor”. WRs could be better, but they’re fine. Had Ace Sanders come back, I think we could have a much better chance to beat some of these teams like UGA. Dude was tiny, but could smoke some DBs and return kicks.

They are both really good teams. Spurrier is just saying this to light a fire under his teams ass. He’s a college coach, it’s what he does.

man you would think with having a guy as athletically gifted as clowney that you would move him around a bit. maybe drop him into coverage every now and then or something. almost every play uga ran was away from him. just cant believe usc wouldnt be able to take advantage of that. smh see clowney u shouldve came to fsu

That’s right “noleitup”. He should have “came” to FSU where they teach English and other hard subjects.

But Spurrier is taller than Nick Saban, and J.Clowney says that is what really counts…..

Maybe Steve should focus on him not being a good coach right now. His play call on the failed fourth and goal was terrible. Everyone I was watching with was screaming for Conner Shaw to call a timeout and change the play when he lines up in the shotgun

Hey Stevie, you don’t have a very good team period. As per the last few years your team will have a good record, but as Bleacher Report pointed out you have the easiest Div 1 schedule. South Carolina University will only have to play two teams (Florida and Clemson) with winning records on game day. We already know that in the last three/four/forever SC has a losing record against teams with winning records on game day.

He could not have got in FSU. The only school that would admit him was Dirt pecker University.
