Michigan State will start Connor Cook at QB, again

Despite Michigan State giving all quarterbacks a chance to compete for the starting job for this weekend’s game against Youngstown State, it will be Connor Cook once again getting the starting nod. Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio announced the decision on his radio show, according to Diamond Leung of MLive.com.Cook started for Michigan State last week against South Florida.

“Connor Cook will start, as I’ve said,” Dantonio said Thursday. “I thought he had an excellent practice today. I thought he showed I guess substance in terms of how he handled the huddle, in terms of his strength in his arm, his passing, etc.”

Earlier in the week Dantonio had freshman Damion Terry practicing with an opportunity to play as well, but Leung says there was no indication from Dantonio during his show whether or not Terry will see any playing time against the visiting Penguins this weekend.

Michigan State’s entire offense has struggled at the start of the year, with the defense having scored twice as many touchdowns as the offense after two weeks. Regardless of who the quarterback is for Michigan State, there is plenty of work to do all around before the Spartans can find a way to get on track before Big Ten play opens in the coming weeks.

“I can tell you this about our offense,” Dantonio said. “I can tell you that Michigan State has been known for toughness, it’s been known to play with effort and to make sure we establish ourself from a toughness standpoint. That has been hammered this week, and we will come to play on Saturday.”

Michigan State has the toughness covered on the defensive side of the football. If the offense can find it soon, the Spartans can still put together a decent season and perhaps even think about making a run to the Big Ten’s Legends Division championship for a second time in three seasons.Right now they have plenty of catching up to do with Michigan and Northwestern off to much better starts and Nebraska still likely to be at or near the front of the division race.
