Ex-Irish DB granted waiver to play immediately for BYU

It came two games into the season, but Chris Badger has finally received the good news he was expecting from the NCAA.

BYU announced Thursday via a press release that the NCAA has granted a hardship waiver to the transfer defensive back. The ruling means that Badger will be eligible to play in 2013, effective immediately.

The appeal for a hardship waiver was based on the fact that Badger’s mother, who lives in Provo, is ill. Including this season, the defensive back will have four years of eligibility remaining.

It was announced last month that Badger would be transferring from Notre Dame to BYU.

Badger, a three-star member of ND’s 2010 recruiting class, took a redshirt his true freshman season last year. Shortly after Badger signed on for what was Brian Kelly’s first recruiting class, he left school after the 2010 spring semester ended to participate in a mission in Ecuador for the LDS church. He returned to Notre Dame in June of last year according to his online bio.
