Florida State suspends two defensive starters

Florida State has suspended two defensive starters for this weekend’s game against Bethune-Cookman. Linebacker Christian Jones and defensive tackle Eddie Goldman will each be out of action this weekend due to violations of team rules, which of course are unspecified at this point.

“It is [disappointing] but it’s all correctable, and it’s all done,” Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said Thursday, according to David Hale of ESPN.com. “But we have to go abide by a certain set of guidelines.”

The Seminoles can afford to be missing a few players this weekend because Bethune-Cookman is hardly a threat. But Jones led the team in tackles a year ago and has been an asset in the defense playing multiple positions this season. Goldman is in his first year as a starter on Florida State’s defensive line.

Florida State will go with youth to fill the vacancies this weekend. Terrance Smith, a sophomore, will get the start in place of Jones. The Seminoles will use both Demonte McAllister and Nile Lawrence-Stample on the line to replace Goldman.

Florida State’s defense has been good but not great in the first few weeks. Last week Florida State shut down Nevada and held the visiting Wolfpack to seven points. The defense will have to get on the same page before ACC play though. Losing playing time even against Bethune-Cookman could set everyone back a step.

No way those two starters are suspended if it was a conference game. The guys would get 10 extra laps around the end zone or not be able to go to the training table for meals.

Suspended for the game against the powerhouse Bthune-Cookman?

How can FSU ever bounce back?
