Starting Irish defensive lineman a game-time decision

When Notre Dame takes to the field against Michigan State Saturday, the Irish may be without a starter on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive end Sheldon Day suffered a sprained ankle in the win over Purdue last Saturday.  While Day was able to practice for the first time this week Thursday, head coach Brian Kelly was not yet ready to guarantee the sophomore’s availability for the game against Michigan State in South Bend.

“He looked pretty good,” Kelly said following practice yesterday. “We’ll see how he responds.”

Specifically, Kelly said Day will be a game-time decision.

After playing in 13 games as a true freshman last season, Day has started the the first three games this year.  This season he has seven tackles and one tackle for loss.

On the Irish’s depth chart, true freshman Isaac Rochell is listed as Day’s backup.
