San Jose CB out of hospital following scary collision

A very scary scene in San Jose Friday night has ended on a decidedly positive note.

During the third quarter of the loss to Utah State, Bené Benwikere was involved in a collision with a teammate that sent the cornerback’s helmet flying through the air. Benwikere was motionless for several minutes before being immobilized and taken of the field on a stretcher, when he was taken to a local hospital for further examination.

Fortunately, the senior had movement in all of his extremities and was diagnosed with “just” a concussion. The school stated on Twitter that the defensive back has been released from the hospital and is now at home.

“Hello everyone!!! Thank you for all the get well wishes, texts and most importantly prayers. Much appreciated,” Benwikere wrote on his Twitter account Saturday.

There’s no word on Benwikere’s availability for this weekend’s game against Hawaii.

Over the past three-plus seasons, Benwikere has played in 40 games and made 23 starts. He is fourth on the Spartans with 26 tackles and has one of the team’s two interceptions on the season. His six pass break ups are easily tops on the team.
