‘Huge loss’ for Aztecs as broken foot ends Jake Fely’s season

Just about the biggest blow San Diego State could sustain on the defensive side of the ball has unfortunately happened.

Star linebacker Jake Fely, head coach Rocky Long said Sunday, suffered a broken foot in the win over New Mexico State Saturday. As a result, the senior will miss the remainder of the 2013 season.

Fely will undergo surgery at some point in the future to have pins inserted into his foot.

To his credit, Long did not downplay the enormity of losing a player like Fely for the remainder of the season.

It’s a huge loss,” Long said. “He’s one of the best defensive players in the league.”

Fely was a first-team All-Mountain West selection in the preseason and is tied for third on the team in tackles with 20. Last season, he was named second-team All-MWC.

Thanks to the injury, his streak of 30 straight starts dating back to the beginning of the 2011 season will be snapped.
