T.J. Weist tabbed as UConn’s interim head coach

Until UConn finds a permanent successor at head coach, it’ll look to one of its coordinators to guide the Huskies through the rest of the year.

UConn confirmed in a press release that offensive coordinator T.J. Weist will serve as the Huskies’ interim head coach through the remainder of the 2013 season. Weist also serves as the team’s wide receivers coach.

Weist will replace Paul Pasqualoni, who was fired by the school Monday morning.

“I am very pleased to elevate T.J. to our interim head coaching position,” said UConn athletic director Warde Manuel in a statement. “T.J. will bring energy and enthusiasm to our football team as we embark on our American Athletic Conference schedule. T.J. will provide stability to our football student-athletes during this time of transition and will also effectively oversee all elements of our football program including game preparation, classroom success and recruiting.”

Weist is in his first season at UConn, hired by the school to replace George DeLeone in January. DeLeone remained on Pasqualoni’s staff as associate head coach and offensive line coach, but was relieved of his duties today as well.

Prior to spending the last three seasons at Cincinnati, Weist has served on staffs at, among others, Western Kentucky (2002-09), Tulsa (1996), Michigan (1990-93) and Alabama (1988-89).
