Texas receiver Mike Davis takes cheap shot to leg of Iowa State player

Mike Davis dives at the knee of Deon Broomfield

There are always going to be cheap shots in college football, that may never change. Sometimes we can look past them. A late shove out-of-bounds? A late hit on a player looking the other way? Eh, it happens.

But Texas wide receiver Mike Davis executed a calculated cheap shot that is completely indefensible Thursday night against Iowa State. After Texas scored to take a 24-20 lead in the third quarter on a touchdown run, with the ball a good 15 or 20 yards away, Davis lined up Iowa State defensive back Deon Broomfield, who seemed to be walking off field, and dove straight for the back of Broomfield’s left leg.

Broomfield fell to the ground, Davis was penalized for a personal foul penalty. Davis was not ejected from the game. What Davis did in diving for the leg does not fall under the game’s targeting rules, but this sure seemed to be a clear case of targeting. If diving at a defenseless player’s leg like this is not targeting, what is?

Expect the Big 12 to review this incident and act accordingly. If Davis is not suspended for any amount of time in the coming days, it might be the upset of the season.

Mike Davis should be removed from the rest of the game and benched for the season. This was not an inadvertent hit. It was premeditated and cannot be tolerated.

That’s some bush league horsesh-t right there.

  3. classyjacklambert says: Oct 3, 2013 11:04 PM

Inexcusable. That’s a potentially career ending injury attempt.

Well u see what he was really trying to do was ……….… nah jus playin but that guy should be suspended a good couple games if not banned. Thats fkd up

After further review… the wire transfer from Texas to the officiating crew cleared the bank.

The ESPN crew and Texas need to just get a room already.

I cringed and became “animated” when I saw it happen. A pitiful inexcusable hit. He meant to hurt Deon and the Big 12 will review and hopefully will act promptly to get Mike Davis out of the game, at least for a time. Coach Mac needs to also discipline Mike.

If that is not targeting, then what is?

That was so ludicrously flagrant I can’t quite believe I just saw it.

Mack defends the hit, says Davis didn’t hear whistle.

    I shit you not

Mack Brown is trying to be a BS artist.

  10. earpaniac says: Oct 4, 2013 12:37 AM

That was nothing but an attempt to injure. At the very least he should be gone for game.

The Slimy Used Car Salesman defends Davis’ play as “competing”.

Mack Brown strongly defending Mike Davis’ block, thought Davis didn’t hear whistle. “I thought it was competing.

Davis won’t be suspended until AFTER the Oklahoma game if at all, Texas needs he to have a shot. Mack Browns comment are that of a losing coach who needs to go.

  13. halbert53 says: Oct 4, 2013 7:32 AM

He should have been ejected and banned for rest of season. Any coach with integrity would discipline the player. If the victim had been a Longhorn, Brown would have been calling for ejection. I can understand a coach defending one of his players on some marginal plays, but this is blatant attempt to injure and will result in reciprocal cheap shots.

It’s Texas. Big 12 will probably give him a sportsmanship award.

“He was competing” – Mack Brown

  16. tgaustin says: Oct 4, 2013 11:04 AM

As a big Longhorn Honk, that play was pathetic…piss poor! He should be supspended at least 2 games. Absoulutely pathetic performance last night…now it’s fun to play “what would you do if you won a million dollars” with the AD and coach search. Strong? Shaw? Muschamp? Tomlin??? O’Brien?

  17. 8to80texansblog says: Oct 4, 2013 1:39 PM

This was just hideous. He should have been ejected immediately. To heck with targeting, that was an intentional cheap shot.

If the Big XII doesn’t do the right thing here and suspend him, I hope Mack does.

I’m a huge Texas hater… I don’t think that play speaks for the whole Texas program, but Mack is already under tremendous pressure to gain hold of his team and get them to play better. This doesn’t help.

Let’s see if the Big 12 does anything to discipline him. I’d bet the conference office is just like the “pro-texas” conference refs, and nothing happens. The player to the right of Davis also put a block on an ISU player, but he did not go low.

Mack is done. He’ll stand firm now, but he sees the writing on the wall. Meanwhile, recruiting will suffer under the uncertainty and when Texas is struggling for the next 4 years he’ll have his moment(s) of retribution. Everyone loves to set up a future ego stroke. Looking back on his tenure, he’s really been average and that national championship belongs to Vince Young, not Mack.

  19. dhardy8207 says: Oct 4, 2013 6:25 PM

Davis will not be suspended because the Big 12 will review, call Mack and Dodds to get their stories together for the media, and all will just be swept under the rug just like that GOD AWFUL officiating 90% of America saw last night…

Furthermore if what one blogger states earlier is true of the “replay official” being a UT grad, that should really be consider aggregious and he should be band from officiating.

  20. clonefan says: Oct 4, 2013 6:46 PM

Let’s get this straight, it was committed by a Loghorn against a Cyclone. We all know exactly how this will play out. The Cyclone will be suspended for taking illegal benefits from a Longhorn player. What illegal benefits you ask? Why, he got his name mentioned on TV didn’t he?
Heck that Cyclone probably took his entrance exams on the wrong day and should lose one year of playing time and he should lose one more year for accepting free rides to Boone to attend JC this summer.

  21. bronzestarusmc says: Oct 4, 2013 8:17 PM

If the Big 12 doesn’t do anything, it is entirely BS. Davis showed nothing but being a punk! I know most coaches would not and do not tolerate that crap! But, Mack Brown balls are the size of peanuts, he will not do a dammmmm thing!
