No. 3 Clemson gave Syracuse a rude welcome to the ACC on Saturday, burying the Orange with 35 first-half points as Heisman Trophy candidate Tajh Boyd tossed four touchdown passes to stake the Tigers to a 35-7 lead.

Boyd didn’t wait long to strike. Adam Humphries snuck behind the Orange secondary and Boyd found him for a 60-yard bomb on the game’s third play. By the end of the first quarter, Clemson was leading 21-0 and Boyd had 210 passing yards.

For the half, Boyd was 18 of 23 for 363 yards, with one interception (his first of the season) to go with his four touchdowns. The Tigers piled up 439 yards of offense to Syracuse’s 139 yards and 20 first downs to the Orange’s four.

Syracuse sophomore quarterback Terrel Hunt faced his first real test of the season and did not hold up well. He came into the game completing 77 percent of his passes and had yet to throw an interception. But he went six of 14 for just 25 yards in the first half and tossed two picks as the Orange offense struggled against the speedy Clemson defense.

The score of the game could’ve been worse, but Clemson failed to convert on a fourth and goal from the Syracuse five yard line with two minutes remaining in the half. Orange coach Scott Shafer was not pleased wit Clemson’s intentions.

It’s no wonder he’s frustrated. The ‘Cuse has a long way to go before it can compete with the elite powers of the ACC.
