Mike Davis on cheap shot: ‘I’d do the same thing’ again

Jansen Watson, Mike Davis AP

That reprimand really showed him, Big 12.

Texas wide receiver Mike Davis was the subject of a significant amount of negative attention thanks to a blatant cheap shot he delivered on an Iowa State defensive player last Thursday night.  Many (most?) thought the receiver deserved to be suspended for at least a game.

Instead, in its infinite wisdom, the Big 12 decided to issue a “stern” reprimand.  “Mr. Davis is also put on notice that any future such behavior may result in a more serious penalty, including possible suspension,” the statement from the conference read.

Apparently, Mr. Davis didn’t get that particular memo.  Or decided to completely dismiss it.  One of the two.

“If we have another run-pass situation, I’d do the same thing,” Davis said Monday when asked about the play. “If the DB’s loafing, he deserves to get cut.”

Bravo, Big 12.  Well done, Mack Brown.  Y’all really showed him.

Has this guy ever heard of karma? I hope he gets an introduction quite soon.

I think Brown is as good as gone. They look terrible almost every week and clearly have no discipline.

You never wish injury on any player but, this guy won’t be getting any get well wishes if he gets hurt especially a knee injury.

  4. shadowcell says: Oct 7, 2013 1:46 PM

And yet when some opposing DB inevitably levels Davis for it, he’ll be the one suspended by the Big 12. Of course.

Nothing surprises me in the Texa$ Conference (dba Big 12) any more. Way to go Bowlsby – that firmly worded reprimand did a lot of good for this prima donna.

I was really worried that the Big 12 was going to implode a few years ago. That was really stupid.

I see a new bullseye on Brown’s back. You reap what you sow! I hope it isn’t the case.

    Texas is trashy this year.

mike davis better have his head on a swivel this week vs OU and for the rest of the season…he will be a marked man, and since he had a knee injury of his own, missing the K-State game, you can imagine where db’s in the big 12 will place the target on him

  9. tgaustin says: Oct 7, 2013 2:49 PM

Just shut your Mouth Mikey! The whole world, even Congress thinks you screwed up!

Texas has removed the veil on the big12. They are in control of the league. This kid needs a suspension. Instead, he’s rubbing it in.

With all the money The University of Texas has it still can’t buy class.

  12. tulsacyfan says: Oct 7, 2013 3:04 PM

    Or a win over OU.

    Boomer!!!

  13. barkleyblows says: Oct 7, 2013 3:07 PM

Really hope someone does a cheap shot on this clown.

This reminds me of the comment a player at Alabama (I forget which one) in 2006 when he was arrested by Bessemer AL police for possession of marijuana and a gun in his car: when asked by a reporter what he thought his punishment would be, he responded, “Oh, maybe they’ll give me an ice cream cone.” He was suspended one game (third game of the season…against Duke). This was Mike Shula’s final season, as discipline on the team totally collapsed, at least in part to this joke of a punishment for the infraction. Mack Brown should learn this lesson if he has any hopes of staying as head coach in Austin: suspend this guy for at least a game and send a clear message that neither this clown’s play not his attitude will be tolerated.

  15. shadowcell says: Oct 7, 2013 3:48 PM

On top of not punishing him for a flagrant cheap shot, this response is not really in Mike Davis’ best interests either. It’s not just because he apparently needs to be taught that such moves are unacceptable. On top of that, if the legitimate authorities over the player’s head won’t punish him for an obvious misdeed, then it’s all the more likely some opposing player will take it upon himself to do so. And I don’t think a suspension from the Big 12 or a benching from your coach is going to leave you with a concussion or a shredded ACL or something.

No one would have any sympathy for Davis if that happened, and even if he had been punished, some opposing player might have targeted him anyway. But the Big 12 and Brown aren’t doing him any favors with “stern reprimands” and defending it as “competitiveness.”

Start the countdown for tgaustin to come to the defense of Mike Davis…

This punk is a thug….a piece of garbage who needs to be taught a lesson! Somebody will get to Davis because cheap-shot, dirty players always get theirs eventually. Maybe not this Saturday, but he’ll get his when he least expects it. I am rooting for Oklahoma to put such a whooping on Texas this Saturday because this THUG, this PUNK has so pissed me off! The hubris (look it up Hargis AH) of this ANIMAL to say he’d “do it again” is just too much to stomach. Hey Mack Brown: Throw this low-life, 2-bit punk off your squad!!!! Do the right thing!!

Really hope someone does a cheap shot on this clown.

What he did was wrong and he does sound very much like a clown. Still, if it was wrong for Davis to take a cheap shot, why are you advocating that someone else do the same thing? Are cheap shots are wrong or are they not wrong?

What is sad is that episode has shown the country exactly what Texas is. You either do things Texas way or you pay the price. The Big 12 deserves better.

Some defensive back is going to take a half game suspension and launch on Davis or one of the Texas players, and you will have Mack whining about how the “vicious hits” have to stop.

All the other coach has to say is that our kid was “competing”.

    You reap what you sow.

So, just what did you expect from the Big 1-Little 9 Conference and a school that has a uterus for its logo?

  21. be4bama says: Oct 8, 2013 9:34 AM

LOLOLOLOL it does look like an uterus!!!

  22. jjsooner says: Oct 8, 2013 9:45 AM

Well, punk is what punk does. CHEAP. Pretty sure OU has a safety that’ll be keeping an eye on little punk boy. Mikey, bring that garbage to the RRR and they’ll carry you out on a stretcher. Season over. Dumbass just cost himself a bunch of money in the NFL, if he even makes it there. A character issue for sure. See you in Dallas punk.

  23. tgaustin says: Oct 8, 2013 11:05 AM

Just competing. High Pot, my name is Kettle.

  24. tgaustin says: Oct 8, 2013 11:31 AM

…oops, meant “hi” not “high”…sometimes I think that’s what posters on here are.

  25. jjsooner says: Oct 8, 2013 11:38 AM

Soooooooo you want to excuse this by comparing it to the same nonsense from another team? Ummm who’s high?

  26. tgaustin says: Oct 8, 2013 12:30 PM

Man, what is it with those who have trouble reading on this site…please see my first response! Or previous ones on Davis.

Just so you don’t feel left out JJ!
