USC: Fake representatives are contacting coaches on our behalf

If there was ever a lesson about not believing everything you hear during a coaching search, read this post.

Hours after Tony Dungy said on the Dan Patrick Show that he had been contacted by USC about its head coaching vacancy, the school issued a remarkable disclaimer, saying:

USC has been alerted that individuals posing as USC representatives made overtures to two coaches regarding the Trojans’ head coaching position.

In one instance, a person falsely identifying himself as a high-ranking member of the USC athletic department attempted to make contact several times with the Denver Broncos’ coaching staff to discuss the Trojan job.  That person has been identified by USC and appropriate action is being taken.

In another, someone claiming to represent USC reached out to a contact of former NFL head coach and current NBC broadcaster Tony Dungy, who said on today’s Dan Patrick Show that he had no interest in the Trojan job.  That person, again not a representative of USC, also has been identified and USC is in the process of contacting that individual.

“Tony’s discussion on the radio today of being contacted by USC was a complete surprise to us,” USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said.  “So were the calls made to the Broncos.  I can assure you no authorized representative of USC or our athletic department made these calls.

It’s pretty rare to see such a detailed denial from a school about a matter like this and it makes at least one thing really clear:  That USC really wants everyone to know that neither Jack Del Rio nor Dungy are legitimate candidates for its vacant job.

But it leaves a couple other dangling questions, too. Why would someone pose as a USC representative in this situation? What is there to gain? Could it be that someone attached to another school is hoping to throw a wrench into USC’s search process? Is this an overzealous agent hoping to get his client’s name out there? Was it a member of the media hoping to get the scoop straight from the coach’s mouth?

Based on what we’ve seen so far, this may turn out to be one of the more entertaining coaching searches in quite a while.

One thing is for sure , if Pat Hayden said he didn’t authorize those people to make overtures , then USC is being punked . The season is shot anyway Hayden …wait until the off-season to make an announcement . The candidates will be plentiful and I’m sure they will come knocking on your door .

Seems like a whole lotta prankin’ goin’ on. But maybe there is some weird end game we just haven’t thought of yet.

Can’t imagine the Trojans would consider Dungy–though I greatly admire the man and think he’s a fine NFL coach–but these denials don’t necessarily mean USC wouldn’t approach Del Rio. They only mean USC hasn’t yet approached Del Rio. He wouldn’t be my first choice, but I’d be surprised if he’s not under consideration.

If this was Arkansas we were talking about, I’d assume it was a fan.

For USC though, I’m gonna guess a wannabe agent. The big cities are replete with JD-waving schmucks eager to fake their way into prominence.

OTOH, maybe it was the ghost of Lennay Kekua 😀

Coach Dungy’s comments should not be taken lightly, however. He has a very interesting perspective on who would make a great HC at USC.

I smell a large dose of… SPIN Control.

MAYBE… MAYBE there have been some unofficial contacts… but I’m not buying the whole story.

USC doesn’t want to be publicly turned down.

That would be my guess as well. As much as I hate to admit it, USC is a top 10 job and I am sure the powers that be do not want the perception out there that people are rejecting them. This would possibly hurt donations, etc.

I am sure USC will get someone who can bring the program back, but they need to be very prudent in their search. The last thing USC needs is to “miss” in their search twice in a row. One failure (Kiffen) is pretty easily to fix, but a second puts you on a bad path that can take a decade to recover from.

All these strange developments in the coaching search and yet, the first thing that occurs to me is … why does Pat Haden wear such odd glasses?

Who cares…they had a fraud posing as their head coach for years, so this isn’t that out of line.

Why isn’t anyone assuming its a mid or high level booster asserting themselves ( like the UT booster talking to Saban’s agent)?

I can’t believe usc would go for dungy, he’s an awesome coach but I can’t see him coaching in college, for USC or any program. I hope usc picks a good coach and that the program returns to the top.

Question: Why the hell wouldn’t Jack Del Rio or Tony Dungy (even though he said multiple times he’s done coaching) be legitimate candidates. Personally, I’d like to see the aTm coach get it, but still …

Way to take matters into your own hands Trojan fans. Worried that your AD is inept and will hire someone unacceptable for the job again?… Well have no worries, just make sure you dial *67 before hand so the call can’t be traced back to ya!…

Wow! We need all Bucs fans to call One Buc Place and personally fire Greg Schiano!
