Dad: Utah TE Jake Murphy has broken wrist

While Utah has yet to confirm it, the father of Utah tight end Jake Murphy has “reported” that his son suffered what could be a significant injury last week.

In a tweet sent out Monday night, Dale Murphy, the former MLB star, wrote that the junior broke his wrist in last Thursday night’s loss to UCLA.  The elder Murphy stated that his son played the entire second half with the injury and that he will undergo surgery today.

The results of an MRI are expected as early as today.  How much information is divulged by head coach Kyle Whittingham will depend on the severity of the injury; the Deseret News writes that “Whittingham will just comment on season-ending injuries at this point — meaning he’ll discuss the matter with the media only if Murphy is sidelined for the rest of the year.”

Murphy is fifth on the team this season with 10 receptions for 179 yards.  Along with Wesley Tonga, he’s listed as the co- starting tight end on the most recent depth chart.  Tonga did not play against the Bruins due to his own injury issue.
