Mitchell didn’t, as expected, play in the Wake Forest loss this past Saturday — the fourth straight game he’d missed — with the more realistic target being a return this Saturday against Syracuse. Thus far, though, Mitchell has yet to participate fully in practice since incurring the injury in the season opener.
As for the Orange target date, Mitchell gave himself a “50-50” chance of playing this weekend.
“(Coach) doesn’t want to put me in a position where I have a setback,” Mitchell said yesterday. “If I’m still feeling good, without having any soreness or pain, then I’ll play on Saturday.”
On a teleconference today, head coach Dave Doeren would only say that there’s a chance Mitchell plays.
Mitchell, a graduate transfer from Arkansas who was named the starter shortly before kickoff of the opener, broke his foot on the third possession of the season against Louisiana Tech. On the first two possessions, Mitchell totaled 93 yards passing and 19 yards rushing, with the Wolfpack scoring a touchdown on each possession Mitchell completed.
Pete Thomas, himself a transfer from Colorado State, has started the past four games in helping to lead the Wolfpack to a 3-2 start to the season.
