Turf toe to cost Taylor Martinez a third straight game

A lingering foot issue will bleed into another week for Taylor Martinez (no relation).

Nebraska announced Thursday that, as somewhat expected, its longtime starting quarterback will be unavailable for Saturday’s game against Purdue. Martinez has been struggling with turf toe, an injury he incurred in the Sept. 14 loss to UCLA and has kept him out for wins against South Dakota State and Illinois the past two games.

It’s just like we have been at the quarterback position,” head coach Bo Pelini said, confirming that Tommy Armstrong will once again get the start in the conference game against the Boilermakers.

The Saturday game will mark the redshirt freshman’s first career start on the road.

In his first two starts in the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium, Armstrong completed just over 71 percent of his 28 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Most importantly, he’s thrown zero interceptions in the first 28 attempts of his collegiate career.

The quarterbacking duties, though, won’t be solely placed on Armstrong’s shoulders as senior Ron Kellogg will, as has been the case since Martinez was sidelined, see the field as well.
