Boyd sets Clemson passing record, but Clemson trails BC

Tajh Boyd, AP

Is Clemson getting caught looking ahead on the schedule to their home game next week against Florida State, a match-up many seem to feel will serve as the ACC Championship Game months ahead of schedule? Boston College has frustrated Clemson in Death Valley, owning a 7-3 lead at halftime.

Despite the struggles against Boston College, Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd set a new Clemson passing record for most all-time passing yards with 9,671 yards to pass former Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. At the half, Boyd has completed 16 of 21 pass attempts for 174 yards but none of those passes have reached the end zone. None of Clemson’s plays have reached the end zone. Credit Boston College for a defense doing good work in the first half. The Eagles gave up 232 yards of total offense but recovered a pair of Clemson turnovers to tame the Tigers. Considering this defense came in to today’s game ranked 13th in the 14-team ACC in total defense and 9th in scoring defense, the first half could not have gone much better for Boston College.

Boston College has not gotten much going on offense though, so the question will be how long can the defense continue to keep Clemson down? Earlier in the season we saw Clemson turn things on in the second half against North Carolina State, with Boyd and company able to shrug off a mediocre start. North carolina State failed to capitalize on some Clemson mistakes, and so far that has been the case for Boston College. Other than a 38-yard touchdown run by Myles Willis that caught Clemson’s defense committing to a run to the right side while Willis countered to the left, Boston College has not seen a whole lot of production. The Eagles converted just two of seven third downs, punted three times and had another drive on an interception.

Can the Tigers start to take advantage on offense after the break? Or will Clemson take an unexpected stumble before facing Florida State?
