Nebraska, Oregon schedule future home-and-home series

The official announcement of a football game at a racetrack wasn’t the only big-time FBS scheduling news going on Monday morning.

In a press release, Nebraska announced that it has scheduled a future home-and-home series with Oregon. The Cornhuskers will host the Ducks in Lincoln Sept. 17, 2016, then travel to Eugene Sept. 9, 2017.

The addition of Oregon on Nebraska’s future schedule came as a result of a request from Tennessee to make push back a future series. The Cornhuskers and Vols had originally been scheduled for a home-and-home in 2016 and 2017 but, because of the Battle of Bristol announced Monday morning (we’ll have a post on that later), they asked that the NU-UT series be moved to 2026-2027.

“This is a win-win scenario,” athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in a statement. “The University of Tennessee asked for scheduling relief, and we were able to add the University of Oregon, a perennial top-25 program, to our non-conference schedule as we roll into the College Football Playoff era. This should be a great series, not only for our football programs, but for the tremendous fans of both schools.”

The two programs have met just six times previously, the last coming in 1986. The Cornhuskers own a 5-1 edge all-time.

In one final NU scheduling note, the 2016 game with Wyoming originally scheduled for Sept. 17 has been moved up to Sept. 10 that same year.
