Non-AQs sweep weekly Walter Camp honors

Temple Army Football AP

For the first time this season, the fine folks at the Walter Camp Foundation have dipped their toes into the non-AQ pool for their weekly honors. In fact, the water felt so good, they did it twice in one week.

In a later-than-normal release Sunday evening, it was announced that Army’s Terry Baggett and Louisiana-Monroe’s Isaiah Newsome had staked their claim to Camp’s National Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Against Eastern Michigan Saturday, Baggett rushed for an academy-record 304 yards on just 18 carries in the win. Baggett also scored on touchdown runs of 4, 67, 34 and 96 yards.

Baggett’s total broke the program record of 269 yards set by Michael Wallace in 1999, and is the most at the FBS level in 2013. His 96-yard touchdown is second in the academy’s history, trailing only Greg King‘s 97-yard run in 1977.

It should be noted that Baggett is the first Army player to earn Camp weekly honors, which began in 2004.

Newsome became just the second player in Sun Belt Conference history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game in ULM’s win over Texas State. The senior also broke the SBC record for interception return yardage in a single game with 146.

Newsome is the second Warhawk to claim Camp honors, joining quarterback Kolton Browning from September of 2012.

Below is the year-to-date list of weekly 2013 Camp honorees:

WEEK 1: Alabama wide receiver Christion Jones, Virginia safety Anthony Harris
WEEK 2: Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun
WEEK 3: Ohio State quarterback Kenny Guiton, UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr
WEEK 4: Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage, Maryland safety A.J. Hendy
