Spurrier still knows how to take jabs at Tennessee

When he was a head coach of the Florida Gators, Steve Spurrier was known to take quips at the expense of Tennessee. His one-liners cracking jokes on the Vols became part of his legendary career as much as his great Florida teams.

“You can’t spell Citrus without UT.”

“I know why Peyton [Manning] came back for his senior year: he wanted to be a three-time Citrus Bowl MVP.”

Tennessee was not the only subject of a Spurrier line, but some of his best took aim at the Vols. With South carolina getting ready for this weekend’s game at Tennessee, Spurrier still has some good lines to share. Talking about Tennessee’s recent coaching situations, from Lane Kiffin to Derek Dooley and now to Butch Jones, Spurrier showed he is aware of just how many games he has coached in Neyland Stadium compared to Tennessee’s various coaches.

So let’s keep track of the score. Spurrier will have 14 games in Neyland Stadium. That number is accurate. This weekend will be the fifth game in Neyland with Tennessee, but Jones previously coached Cincinnati in a road game at Tennessee so this will mark the sixth game for Jones.Dooley coached 22 games in Neyland over his three-year stint as head coach for the Vols.

As for Kiffin, the former Vols coach for one year before jumping ship for USC coached eight games in Neyland Stadium.

While I am a UT fan, never had an issue with Spurriers quips-part of the fun of college football.

Still think his best one was a game just after part of the library burned and being sad because some of the books were not colored in yet.

I stand corrected. Still funny no matter who it was directed at.
