Ole Miss hangs on to upset No. 6 LSU, 27-24

Bo Wallace, Anthony Johnson AP

It seemed like we’d read this script before.

Ole Miss, with a comfortable lead over LSU, makes just enough bumbling mistakes to let the Tigers come back and break their hearts.

Only, that’s not what happened this time.

This time the Rebels overcame their mistakes and made some big plays of their own to hold on for the 27-24 upset over No. 6 LSU in Oxford.

Andrew Ritter’s 41-yard field goal with two seconds to play was the biggest play of them all, but it came after some very nervous moments for Ole Miss.

The Rebels seemed to have the game in control, up 24-14, early in the fourth quarter. The Rebs once again stopped the LSU offense cold and forced a punt at midfield with about 10 minutes to play. But Korvic NeatΒ muffed the punt and the Tigers took over at the Ole Miss 13-yard line. A monster sack by Isaac Gross forced LSU to kick a field goal, but the momentum was shifting.

The pressure increased even more on the next drive, when Ole Miss drove 63 yards to the LSU 12-yard line only to have Ritter’s 29-yard field goal attempt blocked.

Zach Mettenberger then led LSU on an 11-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry to tie the score at 24.

Cue the Ole Miss meltdown, right?

Wrong.

Starting at his own 15-yard line, quarterbackΒ Bo WallaceΒ (30 of 39, 346 yards) stepped up and did what he had done all night, completing key passes and rushing for tough yards, while leading his team down the field.

That’s when Ritter got the last laugh.

So not even LSU could avoid the barrage of upsets on Saturday. The Tigers are now 3-2 in the SEC and will need a lot of help to get to the conference title game.

For Ole Miss, it was the biggest win of the Hugh Freeze era. With such a young and talented team still finding its way, it won’t be the last.

Just another week in SEC football.

When you play in the SEC you don’t take anything for granted, ranked or unranked.

Just goes to show you, there is only one Pro team in the SEC.

  3. normtide says: Oct 19, 2013 11:24 PM

I thought this game had OT written all over it. I’ve been very critical of Bo Wallace, but he stepped up today. In rivalry games like this, records don’t matter. That’s the reason why the UT-Bama game worries me.

SEC eats its on. What did Stoops say about only a few good teams in the league? Think it’s safe to say he was wrong.

imaduffer, hun I hate to tell you but one day or nite that bubble’s goin to bust on you and you’re goin to be left with egg the size of Mt. Rushmore on your face then what’re you gonna say? Haven’t you ever been told what goes up must come down? But I like what my best bud says better: the closer to the ground you get on climbin down a flag pole the bigger your ass gets. So I wouldn’t be flyin too high at anytime cause you’re bound to fall flat of your ass at anytime.

normtide, I with ya except for one teeny weeny thing: Zach had to many pickoffs. I haven’t a clue as to where his head was but it sure wasn’t on the game or his normal playin. Geesh, I can’t figure out what he was thinkin. If it was the coverage they did an outstandin job. I’m still scratchin my head tryin to figure that one out. I’d thought about callin the elder statesman of the Holy Terror Trio and askin him (the oldest bro) but I just didn’t feel like takin his scarcasim and not to mention his rubbin it in. Then again maybe he would’ve taken it easy on me, I’d hope ;( . Lets just hope A&M’s still banged up later.

Just attended this game. Ole Miss’s win is being tarnished not by anything done by the players but by the poor behavior of a number of their fans, mainly the student body.

Got a simple battery from some students because I wore opposing colors and had to walk on campus. My father in law also had to break up a brawl between at least one Ole Miss student and another individual.

A win over a top 10 team should be celebrated, but not like a soccer riot.

Let me guess, the Big 12 is the toughest?

Honestly, the Pac 12 looks like the toughest conference so far.

How insecure you are to go on all the SEC threads and talk trash. Especially since Texas would be the fourth best team in the SEC… West.

I guess it makes sense because Ole Miss went into Austin and stomped your Shorthorns. How great it was to see all those sad faces in Austin as Ole Miss ran all up and down the field on them.

    Typical Shorthorn insecurity.

  9. irishdodger says: Oct 20, 2013 1:51 AM

Seriously, does any HC mismanage the clock worse than Les Miles?

  10. geodude11 says: Oct 20, 2013 1:59 AM

The last two weeks have the “Polls” spinning! Zach had his worst performance of the year to date. None of the three interceptions should have been thrown, either he threw it short or the receivers didn’t adjust their routs to be in position for a catch. Last weeks defense appears to be more of Florida’s ineptitude than impressive defense at this point. They’re good players with a good system, it’s just too much to expect so many players elevating their level of play at one time. Time should show improvement, next year is scheduled,

  11. irishdodger says: Oct 20, 2013 2:01 AM

Come on Norm, you’re better than that. Your Tide are elite as usual & I thought LSU was a close second, but u gotta admit the defense is severely lacking in your conference thus far. A&M, Georgia, Tennessee & Auburn can’t stop air. South Carolina’s D isn’t much better despite Clowney. Kentucky, Arkansas & Mississippi State are embarrassingly bad. Vandy just beat a team with a winning record for the first time in two years. To be fair, Auburn & Mizzou have bounced back impressively after disastrous 2012 seasons. Malzahn deserves more respect for his coaching ability…I bet Hig fans wish Houston Nutt hadn’t ran Gus off back in the day. I’m ready to fast forward to an undefeated Bama matching up vs an undefeated FSU or Oregon. That should be a fun game….a lot better than the beat down y’all put on my. Irish last year. Good luck & quit letting the rest of the. SEC ride Bama’s coattails.

  13. cometkazie says: Oct 20, 2013 9:50 AM

Good summary, IrishDodger and congrats on the U$C game.

Shades of the UGa game: if ya can’t keep a team from driving the field for the winning points as time expires, you didn’t play well enough to win. No lockdown defense this year.

Also, the UF win was overrated. Look at what Mo. did to them.

A great weekend for upsets, but was Clemson overrated or did they just suck?

    Ain’t college football grand?

  14. bigugly2005 says: Oct 20, 2013 10:56 AM

More proof that the SEC is NOT the toughest conference. Watch LSU still be rated in the top 25 with 2 losses and ahead of several undefeated teams. Bring on Deb, running her trap about …blah blah blah blah.

  15. chmba says: Oct 20, 2013 11:07 AM

Short story – Ole Miss played their best and coached their best. LSU was outcoached and outplayed. It is clear that our defensive backs are a couple of steps below the past few years and make really stupid plays (15 yard unsportsmanlike call against Mills) rather than cover receivers. I have watched LSU since 1963 and have seen worse quarterback play from qb without Zach’s physical skills and generally dumber qb overall but very few games with dumber qb play than last night.

Story end: season done for LSU; time to start working on next year. Better recruit some better cornerbacks and safeties not to mention smarter about penalties!

  16. normtide says: Oct 20, 2013 11:31 AM

Hey dodger. There is a secret about leagues that the B1G hadn’t figured out. You really need the other teams to be good. OSU will prob be undefeated and left out because of it.

Now, few teams will want to play LSU, Auburn, A&M, or Bama. That’s four teams that are very good. Georgia was before the injuries. These teams play each other, so some have to lose. Is that simple.

When these teams start losing to teams outside the SEC, then lets have this discussion. But a league beating up it’s own? Man, that happens every year.

  17. tgaustin says: Oct 20, 2013 11:35 AM

LSU…doing less with more talent, right folks???

  18. amosalanzostagg says: Oct 20, 2013 11:37 AM

    Irish.

The SEC doesn’t ride our coattails. They compliment us in a great conference. We know that we’ll not be the top rail as conferences tend to have turnover at the top and and at the bottom. I remember the dark days of the 90′s after Stallings.

As to strength of schedule conferences, all you need to do is see the Sagarin rankings for conferences and you’ll see the SEC number 1, PAC 12 number 2 and the Big 12, number 3.

Will the SEC have 8 teams in the top 25? No, 6 at the most.

Given conference play this year, the Iron Bowl is showing up on the radar as the game for Alabama’s National Championship hopes. Auburn is a team of destiny and Missouri should be a top ten team given what they have accomplished the last two
    weeks.

A&M is going through growing pains. Ole Miss is two years away from REALLY becoming a power. LSU is LSU. I wonder if Bielema wishes he never ventured out of the B1G (karma will get you every time). Georgia is lucky to have a team to field,
Tennessee is three years away from being really good, Florida needs offense and
SC needs to have their football coach keep his mouth shut. Don’t wake up the sleeping dog on the porch.

No, Irish, the SEC is not riding our coattails….. we just beat the **** out of each other on Saturday and say “Good game!” afterward. One big family of great schools.

one of the most pathetic games LSU has ever played. Miles has to be held accountable for this, but our QB, who has been touted at the most improved player this year, had a complete regression to last year, and that certainly didn’t help. We didn’t play like the number 6 team in the country, we looked more like number 60, or worse. Season flushed, and now all we have to look forward to is getting stomped by Alabama. If we play them the way we played Ole Miss, we will lose by 100.

  20. greggatx says: Oct 20, 2013 12:20 PM

Waynefontes, I never said the Big 12 was the toughest conference but it certainly NOT the sec. They are just over-rated. They have only a couple of really good teams. Insecure? No, I just like watching big headed teams lose games. We all have our pecking order of teams we like and dislike. Me and most of the rest of the country rejoice in sec losses. There are only three sec teams with less losses than Texas. But hey, we all know how great y’all are! haha

  21. normtide says: Oct 20, 2013 12:23 PM

  24. southernpatriots says: Oct 22, 2013 6:46 AM

Congratulations to Ole Miss coaches, staff, Bo and all the players, and fans! You won this one, we will get you next year!

You can very seldom win a game when you have 3 interceptions and allow over 500 yards of offense for your opponent. However, LSU was able to come back to tie, but the defense could not stop Ole Miss on third down again and again, giving the the opportunity to kick a field goal and win.

Coach Miles and Zach Mettenberger each came forward and take responsibility for the loss. Coach Miles is taking it because he is the head coach, though it was Chavis who should have made changes when certain defensive players were not staying in their lanes once again.

In a rivalry game, so rich in history, and so replete with underdogs winning numerous times, Ole Miss is quite a challenge.

LSU still has much to play for. For this season, and to set things up for next season. That will give Chavis more time with so many rookie defensive players, and hopefully some snaps for Jennings in the homecoming game. I would give Jennings the 4th quarter if possible, not just when we need a yard for a TD.

The Ole Miss tailgaters were tremendous. Very kind and generous and helped us in any and every way they could. They loved our crawfish etouffee, seafood gumbo, boudin balls, a jambalaya. A few remembered us from years ago and we met many new Rebel friends.

I am looking forward to my rocking chair once again since a cold front is moving through south Louisiana and my favorite time of the year is coming.

    It’s ” but you are / you’re a Texas fan”

oxymoron:a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect. (hope you can understand)

You think we are big headed yet most of the country thinks y’all are big headed, that is alabama and the sec. It was fun watching y’all lose to the aggies last year. It was fun watching the aggies lose to Alburn. Historically we beat the aggies two out of three times and yeah we are 7-1-1 against y’all.

  26. normtide says: Oct 23, 2013 11:23 PM

  28. normtide says: Oct 24, 2013 10:51 AM

We did get a prize for it. And your qb was knocked out off the game. But then again, that hurt arm didn’t stop him from fist pumping and high fiving. Good thing he protected that NFL career.

    Championships. That’s the goal.

You say the A&M lose made you happy, yet your team is afraid to play the aggies. Say your excuse, but the whole nation knows you want none of A&M. You would need Baylor to come and peel the aggies off you. But hey, brag about that bank statement. Maybe throw a pep rally at the credit union. On Oct 24, 2013 8:12 PM, “CollegeFootballTalk” wrote:

Except the aggies ran away and joined an out of state conference because they were tired of losing to their big sister. We beat them two of three times historically. We won the last games before they ran of even when we were having a weak season. As you probably don’t know, schools schedule non conference games years in advance. They bolted and we have no obligation to play and beat them any more. We played them for over one hundred years. We are 76-37-5 against them. Afraid? No. But I think Alabama is afraid of them. Y’all are only 3-2 against them. My be the next meet and it will be even. Sorry y’all are having such a problem with them. haha

  32. normtide says: Oct 24, 2013 11:31 PM

Wow, your feeling sorry for Bama? You are foolish.

It’s ok, we understand. Seeing what running qb’s do to your defense, we see why your scared. Will you stop playing Baylor soon too? Or hey, just show them that bank slip. Texas is 4th best in your state, your not the Jones’s, your the step child. When your d can stop the wildcat, give me a call.

  33. greggatx says: Oct 24, 2013 11:57 PM

You’re an amateur at insults. And you have an inferiority complex. I don’t feel sorry for the tide but am laughing at their lack of dominance of a team we consistently beat. As for Baylor they could easily take the tide. If we are not the Jones why are you, the tide and the aggies so worried about us? The more you rag on us show how insecure y’all are. Keep it up. 😎

  34. normtide says: Oct 25, 2013 11:31 AM

You brought up Bama, and consistently talk about A&M. I understand. Once you get mud stomped by BYU you want to talk about other teams. Just jump on that Baylor band wagon, at least they win

  35. greggatx says: Oct 25, 2013 9:52 PM

Its hard not to think about a team you consistently have beaten for over a hundred years. I guess the gravey train with them is over. BYU has a good team and could probably could take the aggies. No surprise there. As for Baylor, they are a good team and again could beat the tide. I like Baylor. They will be tuff to beat. “At least they win”. That shows everyone how little you know about Baylor. Winning is only a recent thing for them. Do you ever look at facts? I don’t think you do. πŸ™ˆ

  36. normtide says: Oct 25, 2013 10:05 PM

BYU can beat Texas, we know that much. What’s next? Ole Miss could beat Bama? We already saw that movie this year. Tell me this, how many times have you seen Texas beat Alabama?

Good job jumping to Baylor, seen many Texas fans doing that. I know Baylor has sucked forever. Makes it even funnier that they are the best big 12 team in Texas.

I’m more curious about what ut would do playing A&M. Even the horn fans fear the aggies. I remember how your program was afraid they would be paired in a bowl with them last year.

Mighty Texas, looking up to BYU. I guess they are the Joneses now. Are you checking their bank statements too? Sad state of affairs in Austin. You would think Santa Anna was at the gates.

  37. greggatx says: Oct 25, 2013 11:06 PM

Actually Texas has beaten alabama SEVEN times and have lost to them only ONCE. But then you knew that as does the rest of the country. And Texas has beaten the aggies 76 times. The tide is more scared of the aggies than Texas, barely squeaking out three wins. The tide rarely plays anyone tuff. There is definitely no one in the sec is very tuff. They are mostly posers. Only two left in the top ten. Dropping like flies as expected.

  38. normtide says: Oct 25, 2013 11:09 PM

You know that southern gentlemen do not kick dogs, hit women or take advantage of the mentally challenged (like greggatx).

Let Texas and their paranoid supporters keep talking, They have their boutique
league and they have a conference champion, nothing more. Let them tout how great Baylor is. (Sagarin ranked 100). You have to remember that the Big12 is Texas *****. By design, Texas has a league built for their complete DOMINATION in all sports. Let them have their league.

After all, Arkansas,Nebraska, Missouri,Colorado, A&M, the B1G,the PAC-12, the ACC all know what Texas is and laughs at what Texas thinks they are.

Remember Alabama is what Texas wants to be when they decide to put their big boy pants. Why else would they Saban? Bama wannabes.

I guess it takes a Bama grad to correct your spelling. It’s spelled “undefeated”, but when you’re as paranoid as you are as a Texas supporter, you get addled, when you get addled, you go mental. When you get mental, you get delusional. When you get delusional, you go to the University of Texas. When you go to the University of Texas you go paranoid. When you go paranoid, the Dallas Morning News writes about your paranoia. When you have paranoia, you have to justify your existence.

Why not just subscribe to Direct TV instead? Oh, wait they don’t carry the LHN.

    Texas, doing less with more.

  52. greggatx says: Oct 26, 2013 4:44 PM

Everyone has a mispelling here and there. get off your high horse. You just described alabama in a nut shell. Why are you sooo worried about Texas. “After all, Arkansas,Nebraska, Missouri,Colorado, A&M, the B1G,the PAC-12, the ACC all know what Texas is and laughs at what Texas thinks they are.” Yeah, that is why we have a winning record against all of them. And oh yeah against alabama too. Because you can’t beat us consistently you fling your hatred this way. The sec is the laughing stock. Down to two top ten teams and maybe one after tonight.
Why is it that Saban wants out of alabama so badly? He is drooling to come to Texas. He wants out. You can only take so much of your hillbilly mentality. Not to mention the lack of support at football games. Actually ATT and time Warner have the longhorn network at no extra charge! Now don’t you fell like an ass?

When you decide to put on your big boy pants, show up. Till then,

    Pay attention, please.

If AT&T Uverse and Time Warner (please note the correct capitalization of a major international corporation, Time Warner, not time Warner……an Alabama grad having to CORRECT you AGAIN is showing everyone just how deficient your actual knowledge base must be.) have to include the mighty LHN as a “freebie” AND the LHN still has a 0.0 share in sports share, that means NO one is watching.

Silly me, I always told clients national TV exposure SHOULD be about making a ton of money. Just another prime example of,

I would not boost so much over your education. Y’all’s ranking (86) is a lot lower than Texas’s ranking (52). Your feeble insults are glaring with the lack of thought and articulation. Y’all aren’t very deep thinkers, are y’all? I’m sure your spell check has your head swollen the size of a grape. It is a good thing your college does well at football since there is nothing else happening in that so called state. I’m sure you have a doctoral degree in fetal positioning. And BTW we don’t snicker to your back like a bunch of woosies, we laugh out loud to your face. Try manning up once in your life!

    Gregg,

    Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.

    Keep trying to butch up!

Once again, an Alabama grad has to CORRECT you that you meant to use the word “boast” instead of “boost”. My education is of no concern to me as I have done quite well, in life and professionally. You, however, continue to take the lure time after time after time, showing just how insecure and paranoid you are. Seek professional help, or you will end up on the floor in the fetal position, muttering to yourself “But, but but, We’re Texas!” The world does not revolve around the University of Texas.

Another example by greggatx of Texas doing less with more.
