Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart didn’t throw a pass and gained just eight yards on three carries in his first collegiate action last week against Oklahoma, but Jayhawks coach Charlie Weis says the true freshman is now in the mix for more playing time going forward.
In fact, he’ll likely play as soon as this week against No. 6 Baylor.
“You can’t say, ‘Well, let’s go play him for nine snaps against Oklahoma,’ and then sit him,” Weis said Monday on the Big 12 coaches teleconference. “As we go forward, he’ll definitely be in our thoughts. You’ll definitely see him show up in the game (6 p.m. Saturday vs. Baylor).”
By playing Cozart -- a three-star recruit out of Roeland Park, Kan. -- Weis appears to be trying to inject some sort of life into his offense, which is averaging a Big-12-worst 18.3 points per game.
Incumbent starter Jake Heaps doesn’t appear worried by the prospect of Cozart getting more time.
“At the end of the day, I’m in it to win,” Heaps said. “Whatever we gotta do to win. I’m not too concerned about everything else. All I can concern myself with is what I can do to help my team win.”
Smart man. The Jayhawks will need all the help they can get if they want to beat Baylor.
