Florida State freshman quarterback Jameis Winston took advantage of his huge showing against Clemson this past weekend to surge into second place in the latest HeismanPundit Heisman Straw Poll released on Tuesday.

Winston’s 444 yards and three touchdowns against the then-No. 3 Tigers in Death Valley helped garner him 20 points and four first-place votes in the weekly survey of Heisman voters from around the country.

Despite his uptick in support, Winston remained slightly behind Marcus Mariota of Oregon, who tallied 22 points and five first place votes. It’s the second-straight week that the Ducks sophomore has led the poll.

Defending Heisman winner Johnny Manziel dropped to third place with nine points and one first-place vote after Texas A&M’s loss to Auburn.

Now in its eighth season, the Heisman Straw Poll is the college football world’s most trusted gauge of Heisman voter sentiment. It has been the most accurate Heisman poll in the country during the past seven seasons, with the final 2012 poll correctly picking the top five finishers and the final 2011 poll picking the top seven.

Each week’s poll is released on Tuesdays throughout the season at

Anyone but Manziel (and never another freshman).

    Marcus deserves it.

At this point, these two are the only ones with the resume. Mariota gets it for me based on 0 INTs and the running threat (10 yards per carry, are you kidding me?). And yeah, I’m biased, too.

But Winston is amazing, and if he keeps it up he’d be fully deserving, freshman or not.

Petty and Mannion could get in the hunt if their teams keep winning and they put up numbers against good teams.

Manziel’s problem isn’t that he won it when he was a freshman. His problem is internal to him. I fear he’s going to have a very sad life, no matter how much money and fame he gets.

Once again, where is AJ McCarron on this list? Not even in the top 6? “Petty and Mannion in the hunt if their teams keep winning”? Anybody out there see who’s leading Alabama to victory week after week? For going on three years in a row? Anybody?

And, to add to this comment, Mark May, on last nights’ Sports Center, when asked which QB he would choose, with any QB in college football to choose from, in a must win situation, chose McCarron over everyone else, because he always finds a way to win.
